Jackson is on pace to claim #1 this year, if the survey was >150,000 residents.

Am I reading that right? New Orleans has double the murder rate of Chicago?
Posted on 5/28/18 at 12:59 am to Celery
Yes, you’re reading it correctly.
A good chunk of Louisiana even outside of New Orleans is more violent on average than Chicago.
Chicago is a huge city and a huge metropolis. It has damn near 3 million people in the city alone (compared to something like 350,000 - 400,000 in New Orleans) and about 10 million in the metro area (compared to about 1.3 million in New Orleans).
500 murders in Chicago won’t register statistically like 100+ in New Orleans or Baton Rouge. Most of Chicago itself is pretty safe, but it’s such a huge city that the bad areas are just really big and really awful. You’re talking about a city that’s geographically probably not that much smaller than Rhode Island and a metro area that by itself would be one of eight or ten largest states in the country.
The rough areas of Chicago are pretty much equivalent in size, economics, demographics, and population as those of Detroit and Cleveland, but instead of having a prosperous class of 100,000 or 250,000 like those two do, Chicago’s prosperous class is 2+ million. We just have a horridly fricked state and municipal debt problem.

I agree but the damn south side kids have been coming up the red line the past few weekends to riot in River. Roth and that is pathetic. They’ve been arresting people nonestop for this I believe. I was walking around Saturday and it was surreal.

I got accosted tonight about an hour ago not that far off a train stop (think red/brown/purple) by a bunch of kids just hanging on a (closed) restaurant patio who asked “Where’s the train” when the train was within visible sight of their area.
I wasn’t too drunk, so I pointed them right back in the direction, got home, and called the threat response number. They were looking to pick off drunk arse patrons from the bars for muggings and robberies. I hope to God 911 responded because they were vultures just waiting on carrion.
That shite pisses me off to no end, and I understand it. I’ve, ahem, been in contact with the Ward 43 alderman about some of this bullshite.

Other than Tulsa, every city on the list is leans bigly towards Democrats. Or "Democrats" if you know what I'm saying.

I was talking to a former BR police chief last week and he said BR had the highest murder rate per capita. He also said BR has seen a 40% increase in shooting compared to this time last year. Our mayor is doing one hell of a job.

2016 was a decade low in murder. Not sure what on earth has happened in the past 24 months, but it’s really out of control.

I'm starting to think the couple of years of low numbers were the anomalies.

I feel the same way, it’s just odd.

I'm half arse reading this morning. Are you insinuating the availability of mass transit is bringing in undesirables to other areas of Chicago, thus increasing crime there?
I so, that is the very thing Gwinnett County (NE of atlanta) fought years ago. Back in the 80s, Gwinnett County was one o the fastest growing areas in the country (mainly white flight, of course). When the MARTA (train system in Atlanta) wanted to extend the spur into Gwinnett County, county officials basically said , "frick that, we don't want it to bring the crime up this way."
So, the spur was never extended.

Driving on 400 and 285 are still awful. Gwinnett really missed a good opportunity.

St. Louis puzzles me mainly because I have never been there, other than an overnight layover stay by the airport. I hear it is bad. The city does a great job of making itself look wholesome. Baseball and Budwesier.
Is this East St. Louis or something else?

East St. Louis is in IL so it won't count towards St. Louis' problems, directly.
Maybe some murderers come from across the bridge, though, I don't know.

Ironic now that folks are wanting white flight out of Gwinnett county. Just viewing from I85, it looks like some rough areas in Gwinnett, especially around Jimmy Carter Blvd.
