A friend of mine on the Florida coast shared with me a cheapie Padron that had aged for a few years in his humidor and it was amazing. The oils in those 2000s plume out perfectly and it really turns into a special stick.

What is a good, quality cigar for a beginner to start on?

I like 5 vegas classic. It's a decent quality smoke for the $.

I'm a big fan of the Excalibur #3 very consistent quality cigar. Never a problem.
I recently ordered a sampler pack of Gurkhas and was totally disappointed. Substandard roll to the point of being unenjoyable.

I would suggest buying a few samplers and going that route. That is a cheap way to figure out what you like, although the selection will be meh.
Another suggestion would be to go to a cigar shop with an educated tobacconist and explain that you want to try 4-5 sticks from a variety of blends/strengths. This will be more expensive, but you will get a better idea as to what you really like, and it will be a more pleasurable experience...
Must try cigars when starting out:
Fuente Double Chateau - not an OMG cigar, but it is a fine introduction into cigar smoking, and very reasonably priced.
Ashton VSG - Amazing stick, will give you an idea what the top of the line cigars are like. Perfect roll, perfect burn, perfect balance of complex flavors.
Padron 26 Maduro - Another amazing stick and a top of the line cigar. This is one of the finest maduros ever made and it will give you an idea of what a maduro is supposed to me.
Quorum - a shitty shitty stick. It is everything you want to avoid, but you should smoke one to know the difference.
La Flor Dominicana Oro - very nice mid range stick that will give you an idea about cigar range. Chocolates and peppers galore.
Acid (your choice) - I cannot stand infused, but you should smoke one and come to your own conclusions.
a cameroon wrapped stick (Fuente Hemmingways are a good choice) This is a creamy stick, expands your palate into different tastes.

Not a fan of Gurkha at all.

Just had a Rocky Patel Edge Nicaragua and it was a finger burner - meaning it was excellent even down to the last possible smoke. I'm in a quandary because I haven't seen them available in most places and only got it in one shop in a mall that I don't usually frequent while on an overnight trip.

Most of the ones people are suggesting are not in the $3 range especially at a cigar shop.
For the money Cuban Rounds are good. $3.00
I had a Arturo Fuente Curlyhead yesterday at the recommendation of the cigar guy at my go to liquor store. $3.49. Again, for the money it was very nice.

I have found that Gurkhas are hit or miss. I've had several that I thought were good and others that were decent but I would not buy again.
FTR- I had a Mon O War armada last night with the Dalmore to wash it down. Both were incredible!

One with a Connecticut shade wrapper - they're usually on the milder side. I'd go with either a My Father Connecticut or a Rocky Patel Connecticut.

They're a very good everyday stick in the $5-$6 range. I had a maduro yesterday.

Yeah, thread went off track and turned into a what are you smoking and debate thread.

If I travel 25-30 minutes to the shop, I'm dropping $10-15.

Has anyone tried AGED Dunhill's?

Are they worth the $9ea.?

Good smoke for a very reasonable price. I always keep a couple of these in my humidor.

If you're in BR, Sarah over at Bayou Tobacco knows her craft quite well.
