Did I say he was a great guy? No, he was a product of him times. Stop judging historic figures like you’re watching a Marvel movie. Historic figures, with a few notable exceptions, are far too complicated to put them in a “good guy” or “bad bad” box.

Seriously I’m not. The dude was a complete dickhead.

Throughout his years in the Americas, Columbus forced natives to work for the sake of profits. Later, he sent thousands of Taino "Indians" to Spain to be sold, and many of them died during the journey. The natives who weren't sold into slavery were forced to look for gold in mines and work on plantations.

You’re doing exactly what I was talking about. You’re looking at Columbus from a modern, and I might add overly emotional, standpoint. And I don’t say that to defend Columbus nor his actions. If you ever want to truly understand history, you have to be able to separate it from modem viewpoints and your emotions.

ETA: And if you think you’re linking history stories I’m unaware of, you obviously haven’t been on the OT long. I’m a freaking walking encyclopedia when it comes to history.

judge them by the standards of today

Over the past 300,000 the humans that had the ability, took what they wanted. That's reality. Only the last few hundred years has that reality slowed down a bit.

Okay. Welcome to world history. Besides the last 50 years the history of the world was kill each other, takeover lands, make the losers slaves.

Show me a place in world history that DIDNT happen. Hint: there is nowhere.

Even the native Americans, yes the NOBLE native Americans, killed each other and had a conflict. Both with other tribes and with the early colonists and settlers.

You might as well say "history was brutal and bad". Columbus was not notable in terms of his tactics.

If only Columbus and his men hadn't showed up with guns and metal we might be whining about the brutality of the natives who found him there. (Even though their brutality is known already,e.g. Aztec empire).

There are plenty of slaves today. Actual, literal slaves.

But the enslavers are Arabs/Muslims. So it isn't reported.

Love this sopranos scene

You're the man. That is a fantastic scene. There's hundreds of incredible scenes throughout The Sopranos. That qualifies as one.

Tony's still lucky Noah didn't punch his fricking lights out.

Imagine when historians read back on the gross rationalizations of abortion rights in the future.

Other than a few exceptions like the Maya, Inca, and Aztec, almost all of the America’s per-Columbus was populated by stone-age hunter/gatherer societies. Wars, slavery human sacrifice, and even genocide were common. What most people today think they know about the native tribes of the Americas is pure fantasy.

Why didn't the Aztecs and Mayans board ships and sail to Europe and conquer Spain?
