Parents still do colored. I prefer white. However they have some that are colored with liquid inside that bubbles that I really like.

Colored lights look trashy. You usually see them in lower-middle class communities.

Colored has made a comeback in the last few years. It's mostly what you see in high end neighborhoods. White still dominates middle class cookie cutter suburbia though

This. I especially like the ones that blink.

Interestingly, I had a dog once who enjoyed watching them blink. (Dogs aren't fully colorblind--they can see blue and yellow).

Before we had kids we alternated. I like coloreds, wife prefers white. As with all major decisions like that, we used to settle the argument over a best of 5 mortal kombat throw down. Kids want colored lights so I win every year now.
