My confusion is probably due to Winston-Salem itself being very small and awake having one of the lowest enrollments in the ACC.

Undergrad enrollment is about 5000, which is below what a lot of other schools have but still above what I thought they had.

That's not true at all. Small schools produce NBA talent all the time.

He was a McDonald's All-American in high school. You think Wake Forest gave him his talent?

SU probably has 10x the enrollment of his alma mater, Wake Forest,

WTF

Wake Forest enrollment: 7,500
SUBR enrollment: 6,500

Why on earth did you think Southern was some massive school?

Being from the area I have always considered Wake to be sort of middle-sized along with even the larger Duke. The Carolinas (like much of the East coast) have a lot of smaller academic-oriented colleges like Davidson, Furman, Wofford and The Citadel.

I knew people who went to Wake for undergrad or grad school and they kept talking down how low the enrollment was.

Granted, at least one of them had come from a Ivy before going to grad school there hence a lot of the bitching about small town and small school.

Trump Admin actually got money into these HBCU’s (many of which were failing) over last four years. But nothing to see here they say.
