So can anyone explain the swimming thing? I honestly don't have a clue why extra fingers or toes would help.

Don't you swim better when you wear swimming flippers? His feet will be like built in flippers when he gets older.

If the child did go into swimming, how would that work if he went competitive when he got older?

I guess they are a lot wider than I realized. But he'd probably still need the right body type to be elite.
If the kid is going to be formed like that, hopefully he has regular functionality of them.
