My son has all of a sudden shown a great interest in Chess and am curious what the best steps are to get him on the right foot.

Should he take in person Chess lessons? I know online has a ton of resources but curious if an actual in person lesson would be better.

How do you get started in kids tournaments.

This came out of nowhere but see it as a good thing as its a game that can be played for a life time.

The chess.com app has some free lessons available and allows you to play against other people or bots. It's a great way to get started and learn the game.

Have him watch some chess YouTubers first to see if he catches on. Eric Rosen, Chessbrah, Alex Banzea, Hikaru Nakamura (might be a little fast for him). Especially Aman Hambleton of Chessbrah, he's currently doing a series where he climbs from total beginner to advanced by following strict fundamentals, win or lose, to teach good habits.

Same with my 12yo, started using chess.com and he’s kicking my arse now. Taught him some solid strategy so I’m trying to get some time online as well haha

I play a ton of chess.

I've never taken lessons, but there are many online learning formats and applications available, including one-on-one instruction. Chessable is a notable one, and they have content for beginners all the way through grandmasters. Youtube is also a great resource. GothamChess and ChessPage1 are good content creators he can learn from there. His school may have a chess club too, which will obviously be beneficial for him.

But the most important thing he can do if he is a true beginner is learn the rules and start playing.

What you're gonna want to do here is find a chess coach who once coached the greatest chess grand master of all time, but who lost his pupil to mental illness and finds himself coaching pikers in a low-rent space in a bad part of town. HIRE THAT GUY. You're wife will distrust him but begrudgingly let him coach your son until she discovers that he and you are trying to beat his senses of empathy, decency and fairness out of him. DIVORCE HER. Do not let him play speed games in the park against the junkies unless it is for cold, hard cash. It's not hustling if everyone knows they're going to lose their drug money. Next, take him and the chess coach on the road. Read my lips: SIDE BETS. The trophies are nice but they don't keep the lights on. Good luck.

When I was a kid I took lessons from a local master. Chess was the only thing that could make me sit still .

Youtube and chess.com are great resources for learning the basics.

Our son expressed interest so we enrolled him in our school chess program led by a former Russian champion.

he made it about 2 months. That's a commitment and a culture we just couldn't get into. That guy was nuts.

I think we'll stick to the occasional family game night chess game against Dad.
