I'm a network admin so I only do cabling when they dont want to source that work. I always pretty much do all cabling at the termination points but I usually use velcro straps, only zip ties when I'm out of them. I've heard that from cable guys for sure.

If I was not at work I would give you an appropriate "Nice Rack" gif. The scene from Hangover comes to mind.
Thanks

BTW if anyone cares this was for an HD-SCI feed going into a video router for a hospital, that's all BNC

Velcro straps is the only way to go.

I've seen that rack on reddit.

That looks like the back of my TV, cable box, sound surround system with speakers and BluRay.

In the process, they would leave in place the old cables that were no longer in use.
This is the professional equivalent to just letting your dishes pile up in your sink and only cleaning them once a month when you completely run out of room, instead of taking care of it as you go. Super sloppy and shows the maturity level of a child.

Labelling machine that does heat shrink costs like $50. I bet they regret that decision.
Maybe I've worked with some weird engineers, but when there are more than like 5 wires, we labelled them 100% of the time and separated the groups with zip ties

This is a solid way to go IMO.

Reminds me of when I worked at a shitty shipyard way back in the day. They were building a new class of navy ship and one day there was a rah rah article in the company bulletin about how they had just set a record for the most cable pulled in the shortest amount of days.
Fast forward 8 months or so and the ship is getting closer to being finished and they had cables hanging out of trays everywhere due to space shortages and they couldn't figure shite out about where a lot of them were supposed to go.

Here you go.

Zip ties can compromise the cables, particularly copper. Velcro should be used in most instances. Some people still use wax string and lace the cables.

And that is why a black hole is inevitable.

This is exactly why you build in some dollars for configuration control, and watch your design drawings, cable labels, and termination layout like a militant drill instructor.
I was formerly in charge of designing the routing and pullbys for about 800k feet of cable rework at a nuclear plant. Fun fun stuff. And don't get me started on Flamastic.

I had a boss once who did this very same thing. Never labeled cables, use any length that was available at the time, etc to get the job done. It was a nightmare in the server racks at work.
When I volunteered to come in at nights to fix the mess and actually install a well thought out and managed cable system, his response was: "Well you could do that, but once we go down that route, we always have to follow that layout to keep things clean"
I just kind of looked at him with disgust and then told him that was the point. No more wondering if the blue cable you were pulling on was the right one or were you about to pull down a router on top of your head if you straighten out the mess.
He also rarely rack mounted anything. You would go into a server rack and half the servers and switches were all sitting on top of each other. Because he used whatever cable was handy at the time, you often would find 25 foot cat5 cables in locations that called for something like a 3 foot patch cable. Utter chaos due to laziness. Took me months to straighten everything out.

Your company should reach out to the government about coming in and doing an update of their major DC's.
They're a fricking mess.
