Central air not cooling in the daytime

I've had this unit for 10 years. Past few days seems like the a/c is not keeping up. Thermostat set to 72 but temp in house rises to 78. Fan runs giving the illusion of the air working but the compressor contactor not engaged. At night, no problems what so ever. I put a fresh filter today so we will see tomorrow. The air being blown from the outside unit is hot as it should be. Small Freon line warm, large one cool. Any other ideas? I'm good with electricity but not familiar with a/c.

I hate to state the obvious, but - maybe call an A/C guy?
If the compressor isn't running at all, I wouldn't expect any significant cooling power at night, just circulation and I don't think you would be comfortable.
Could be a bad motor somewhere, could be a slow leak in the coolant has dropped you below effective functioning - could be a number of things.
I'm not ready to write it off, but you do need an expert, IMHO.

Have you tried changing the batteries in your thermostat?
Try swapping your thermostat before calling an A/C guy.
Also, pull the covers off of your outside unit and hose it off. Gently though, those little metal fins are delicate.

Low on freon. I went through the same shite last year and found that I was 1.5 lbs low.

Check the air temp. coming out of the register with a thermometer. Post it after you know temp

did you get your garden hose out and spray the condenser unit fins free from debris?
if there is nothing there, then just call a reputable HVAC repair/installer

If this should lead you to replacing your system, DO NOT LET THEM HAVE YOUR OLD SYSTEM PARTS. The copper in the evaporator and condensor is worth money. You can sell them whole to scrap metal recycling companies.

After a capacitor that wasn't bad, a "freeze up" because "bad" capacitor wasn't making fan start and then "oh I just found some charring on the control board" that costs $1000 you should be cool in about a week and about $1800 lighter in the wallet

it took people about 10 years to figure this out. yet, in most towns/cities because of all of the copper theft from empty homes and what not. you now not only need to show your DL but also need an HVAC license to sell scrap.

It's a wifi thermostat, no batteries. I haven't taken Temps at register. I know the fan is running outside cause I'm standing right by it when I'm trying to troubleshoot this and the inside fan is running cause there is air coming out of the registers. I know the compressor relay is not engaged cause I can see the contacts haven't been engaged. I will have to take the cover off and see if there is debris in the fins. Without taking off the cover it doesn't look dirty but maybe ants in there from all the rain we have been getting. Can't see any around the slab it sits on though. Thanks. Any idea what spray is used to clean inside coils?
