Central A/C question...

Recently we bought a home in April (built in 2004) that is close to 1900 sq ft. I've began to notice that it seems like my A/C (which is a 4 ton unit) tends to have a hard time keeping the house under 75 since the Summer began. We will put it on 74, but it usually stays in the 75-77 range during the day, then at night when the sun goes down it will get to 72/73 or whatever we set it on. The air blowing out the vents isn't really strong. Do you guys think the unit is just too small for the amount of rooms/sq ft we have in our home for it to keep up during the day? Anything else I could check before spending an arm and leg on an AC guy to look at it? Outside unit appears to be working properly, fan is spinning and blowing out hot air, coils are relatively clean. Thanks!

AC guy will just tell you that's how it goes in the summer.

change the filter
clean the coils
then check the splits (temp coming out of register vs temp going in the return)

Clean filter, coils, condenser?

Also check ducts to make sure you are not dumping cold air into attic

just call the A/C guy. he'll rip you off as much as he can.

and 4 tons should be plenty for a 1900 sqft house unless there are multiple oddities such as super tall celling, poor insulation, way too many windows, etc etc

Sucks that you bought a house with an hvac about 12 years old
Should have negotiated lower price knowing that it was at replacement stage

Tonnage depends on more factors than square feet, but 14 sounds big for 1900 square feet.

I have about the same sq. ft. single story ranch with gable roof. Was having the same problem. Last summer I added an electric gable attic fan and built a rigid foam insulated cover over the attic steps. My a/c can now keep up and shuts off during the afternoon on the hottest days. Using my local cost for electricity I calculated the fan cost about .20 a day or $6 a month to run.

You should have between 53-55 degrees coming out of your vents.
New filters
Clean coils inside and outside
Inspect duct work to check for leaks
Also attic stairs have separation causing hot air to pour in?
Hows the insulation level in your attic? A well insulated attic can make a huge difference as well. Also an attic stair tent cost around $180 and really helps in keeping the cold air inside. You'll get your money back in about 3 years from energy efficiency.

Check the charge Clean unit.

If it's a two story house with one unit, not much you can do. If it's one story, two quick checks are 1) make sure your air filter is clean, and 2)check to see if one of the copper lines on your outside unit has ice on it. If it does, you're low on freon, have a leak somewhere.

Could be low on freon if everything else is working properly. If the air is trickling out of the ducts, check outside unit to make sure coils aren't frozen. If they are, then turn the thermostat to "Fan Only" for about 30 minutes to unfreeze and call an AC guy.

Cost me less than $20 for a rigid foam and aluminum duct tape set up like this.

Sounds like your AC is properly sized.

Not so you measure the differential between return air and supply air - should be 17-20 degrees
to have 53 coming out of the supply air you would need 73 in return air
