You are not wrong. The religious fervor over it has become batshit insane and basically a cult, mostly on the left.
Many of them and businesses they go to will not stop masks for a VERY long time, despite the science.

Hopefully this will also speed the spread among the un-vaccinated. I don't really care how we achieve herd immunity, and if you're scared of the shot, you'll eventually get the virus and get protection the natural way.

The cynic in me says the administration wanted a win after a bad couple weeks. The CDC Director just a couple days ago was saying she wasn't going to let her kid go to summer camp.

I think you can make a legit argument for some PTSD-like delay in going back to normal for some folks. My dad has some preexisting stuff and had a couple family members die of COVID and I think it'll probably be a few months before he's really easing back into normal. I get that to some extent. You've dealt with a year of both real and imagined fears and constant bombardment from media, entertainment, etc. about it and it won't go away overnight.
But I think that's totally different than these people who take mask-d pictures for their work bios or Twitter accounts or weddings or whatever. Most of them are young and healthy, and it's just become an obsessive way to show that they're progressive and to try and lord it over people they view as lesser-than. Crazy.

The church of the masked covidians has become a very real thing. There was a large portion of the US population that had no social prospects, meaningless jobs and nothing really to offer the world who were offered an identity through this. YOU CAN BE A SAVIOR OF HUMIANITY IF YOU MASK UP AND FOLLOW THE RULES. This ideology has offered them a purpose...it has offered them salvation.....it has allowed them to (in their mind) contribute to the greater good.
Once this is finally stripped away by their once leaders they will have nothing left. Their lives will again be meaningless they will cling on as long as they can. Wouldn't even be surprised if fringe pro mask groups start to develop as this thing totally ends.
