Catholic Universities - What’s Catholic about them?

I’m posting this question not to start a religious debate or to get too deep into details about doctrine or practices.
This question probably applies to all religiously affiliated, mainstream universities, but I’m mostly familiar with Catholic universities.
I can name only a couple of differences between a non-religious, private university (like Tulane), a state college like LSU or Nichols, and a religiously affiliated university like Loyola or Notre Dame.
There’s a few extra religious statues. There is a church or chapel ON Campus as opposed to adjacent to campus.
They may have a religious studies department, but not specifically Catholic. However, state schools often have comparative religion classes or maybe even degree programs.
Do you think Catholic universities have lost sight of their mission?

Graduated from the university of Saint Thomas in Houston in 1990.
Liberal arts school that has a core curriculum for every student. Mandatory 9 hours of philosophy and 9 hours of theology. 6 hours of humanities and 6 hours of science.
No different than any college in that guys and girls do party and many have sex. Drinking does occur even at catholic universities. Shocker...lol.
Had an Irish priest teach me calculus and catholic teachings.

Mainstream Catholic universities.
Not seminary colleges.
But I snickered.

Are you under the impression a Catholic University is there to teach you to be Catholic?

Because they exist solely for the exploitation of children?

I went to an undergrad Jesuit university. The jesuits will never lose sight of the mission. The religion and philosophy education you have to take (24 hours in total 12 of each topic) rounded me out to the person I am. I am thankful for the logic, world religions, and business ethic classes I took. I’ve travelled the world and understand different religions. They take you from small minded to well rounded/versed.
Inb4: you were touched.

Really depends on the University.
Huge difference between say, Jesuit run Loyola or BC vs. CUA or Franciscan-Steubenville.

I am not Catholic but I can respect it.
I attended a Catholic College graduation 2 months ago. I did not notice a single cross or reference to Christianity in any commencement speech.
The student speech was a Muslim who mentioned his progressive political views often and multiple times wished the crowd a blessed Ramadan. The vibe was that the school was so progressive to have this outspoken Muslim student speak at graduation.
My traveling party didn't bat an eye and I was just kinda appalled that a supposed Catholic school was so cucked about its mission.
There was nothing distinguishing that ceremony from a public one. If anything, one would get an Islamic impression based on the speaker.

Are you speaking about Catholic University in DC, or Providence College, Georgetown, Notre Dame, or Villanova?
Private catholic universities in the US tend to be well established elite private schools. The Christian schools like SMU, TCU, Baylor, Liberty, and Oral Roberts don’t hold the same prestige.
Now parochial schools (religious based non public schools) for 1-12th graders is collapsing mostly because it’s the lowest form of education available in the US. Private (non-religious) and public charter schools are flourishing.
My opinion is that America should completely abandon the public school concept and the notion that public education (or babysitting) is a birthright.
I worked at a public school where our salary cost was almost $1 million to “house” 5 students who were non verbal, not potty trained, and 3 of them were fed by a feeding tube until they were 21.

Nothing can raise money better than a Catholic entity.

It’s “collapsing” because the pipeline of practicing Catholics is declining and those that are practicing are having less kids.
The growth of magnet and charter programs has pulled non-Catholics that were previously sending their kids to parochial schools. But isn’t as big of an issue as the former.

Well, Catholics, in particular, the Society of Jesus ("Jesuits") were characterized for their furtherance of education and compassion.
Alternatively, these "snake handling" and "glossolalia" schools (Texas Christian, Baylor, Liberty) are nothing too different than your K-12 fly-by-night "Christian academies" that are developed into old, run-down malls or shopping centers. Unfortunately, most cities have them. Instead of providing an education, they provide Braylen and Jaxton an opportunity to play competitive sports at an affordable (private school) price.

What the hell are you talking about? Your average next door neighbor isn’t good enough to play at TCU or Baylor.

You have to be trolling but still...Wut? You think that there's anything religious about TCU and that southern Baptists in fricking Waco, Texas speak in tongues?

And that some no skill baseball player is going to go play at schools that have been to the CWS in the last 20 years. It was quit the attempt at trolling.
