Catfished in Cali: Man drives to West Monroe to marry woman who doesn't exist

WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE) - A West Monroe man has been arrested for an alleged catfishing scheme that eventually led to a man driving all the way from California to marry who he thought was a woman.
According to arrest records, 48-year-old James William Eaton went online pretending to be a woman named Rose Williams.
As Rose, Eaton began an online relationship with the victim. The victim said he sent Rose a total of $1,000 through online services and the mail. He also said he sent care packages to Rose because her mother was ill.
The victim eventually drove to Ouachita Parish to meet Rose and marry her. That's when he found out that Rose did not exist.
When confronted with the accusations, Eaton told Ouachita Parish deputies that he did not know the victim and he never received anything from the victim.
According to records, investigators went to the home where Eaton was staying and found a box addressed from the victim. It was addressed to Rose Williams c/o James William. The box had food in it.
James William Eaton was booked into OCC on July 26, 2019, on charges of monetary instrument abuse and theft.
It's unclear how long the relationship lasted.

Don't really see how any law against this is enforceable anymore. If he wants to be Rose, he gets to be Rose. It's good enough for the people running Target, and they're at least as smart as any hick West Monroe prosecutor.
