Found this on my facebook feed. Guy prolly should run for mayor at this point. Helped new orleans drainage problems more than the guy currently in office.

I've posted a few select pics for those who are facebook averse.

This is the catch basin located at the corner of Sixth and Carondelet during heavy rains on the morning of August 6th.
I have heard for years from my neighbors that they have called they city to complain about it not draining. Allegedly city employees have shown up and said there is nothing that can be done to fix the problem

Here comes the really hard part, and this must be where the city employees were stumped. You actually have to work and get a little dirty. Use the shovel and scoop all the crap out of the hole and put it somewhere else. Preferably, where it will not drain back into the basin.

The Department of Public Works claims that their vaccuum truck crews can clear out 4-5 catchbasins per day. Two men on a truck with powerful equipment and they can't move any faster than that. Wouldn't want to risk a union grievance, but I am fairly confdent I can do 7 in a day alone with a shovel and still have an hour to sit under a tree and eat my lunch.
Apparently there are 16,000 of these clogged around the city. Who took the time to count them, but not do anything to fix them?
Only 15,999 to go.

While I agree with what needs to be done, the workers they have won't do it. Also, their bosses won't write them up.

Well, they working for the government right? Not surprising

The mayor we need, but the mayor we don't deserve.

There's an old saying, that when you take a new job..look for what's currently at a 1, and turn into a 10, as quickly as possible.

Its a storm drain. All this time I've been wondering WTF a catch basin is. New Orleanians have to have a weird name for everything .

Not every shower is a storm, yet they sometimes catch them too.

I like the picture taken on Elysian Fields the other day of 11 city workers cleaning one catch basin

You have to be shitting me. I assumed catch basins that require crews and vacuum trucks were some large central drainage structure. They are street side storm drains? The ones we used to clean out as kids with a rake and a shovel? GTFO.

Frickin' worst run bidness in the city, and that takes a LOT!

So you're saying you dug out the entire basin and cleared everything to the storm drain pipe and you could do 7 in a day? There was no trash in the storm piping when the entire basin was clogged?
Something tells me there is a missing link somewhere in this story.

I didn't do shite.
But don't think there's a conspiracy going on here to frame the public works department.

I grew up in Norco. We had problems with drainage in the ditches and every time it rained the streets would flood. Mom would bitch and complain about it to my Dad and he would call our police juror and nothing would ever be done.
That didn't stop my Mom from bitching at Dad about it. After another rain storm and flooded streets, Mom again bitched. My Dad, tired of hearing all of the complaining, decided to do something about it.
My Dad, being a farmer, knew a little about drainage, took a shovel and re dug the ditches with proper fall from our house to the canal at the end of the street and then to the major drainage canal. Next rain, our street didn't flood. Mom had nothing to complain about.
The only negative, some of my friends thought my dad worked as a ditch digger for the Parish which caused me a little embarrassment. Dad passed exactly one month ago at age 88, he was such a good man.
