TLDR Version - I may need a new thermostat. Does anyone know if I can purchase just the thermostat itself instead of the entire 4 zone thermostat system? This is what I have now: Carrier Comfort Zone ii ZONECC4KIT01-B.

Long Version for the bored or interested types - I think my contractor may have broken a wire going from my thermostat to the controller when he nailed in new baseboards. I get an error code of E-1 which indicates a communication issue between the thermostat and controller. I'm not sure if it's because of him, but there are a couple of nails precisely below the thermostat where the wiring runs, and there was no issue before he put the baseboard in earlier today.

I have to go by a multimeter in the morning and I'll check for continuity between the 4 wires, and hopefully one is broken. I can easily run the new wires and connect things up... easy and cheap fix. If it's not the wires, it's either the thermostat or controller. I can't seem to find anywhere that will sell me just the thermostat (the entire system is roughly $950. Does anyone have any suggestions on this? Or is anyone familiar enough with this system? I'm not opposed to replacing the thermostat with a newer compatible one, but it would have to be compatible with a 4-zoned system with power close/power open dampers.

I don't know the answer to this, but I'd bet you can call the technical folks from one of the aftermarket controls companies and they could tell you exactly what to buy.

ETA: I would check with Honeywell...they are one of the most dependable and have very technically savvy folks available.

He'll be back tomorrow morning to continue his work. But I'm not going to tell him to fix something that may not even be his fault. He's an awesome guy, so if it turns out it is his fault he'll want to fix it himself... no questions asked. I'll tell him what's going on and we'll figure it out. But we're talking something that will cost me literally a few bucks and a half an hour to fix (if it is the wire).

My main concern is if it isn't due to the wire. If it is due to a bad user interface or control board, then I'm looking at a good bit of money. Those are the options I was asking about, and thanks for the person that recommended Honeywell. I've read that those are the top zone systems, but I would probably have to change out the damper actuators also. Damn proprietary parts.

So.... the contractor came this morning and I explained what I think happened. He removed the baseboard and opened the wall up behind it. Sure enough, he broke 2 wires with his nail. He rewired it and all is good. No attitude required.

I have the exact same unit and thermostat. And oddly enough have had the exact same error code pop up. Problem for me is it wasn't due to broken wires. Apparently I have an issue with the main board or thermostat that comes and goes. When I get the E1 code I go to my breaker panel and shut it off there for a few minutes. Basically due a hard reboot to it. Sometimes I have to reset multiple times but it eventually clears. I get that error code a few times a year but am always able to get it to clear. I would fix it but there is a board on the outside unit, a main mother board in the attic and then there is the thermostat itself. To replace everything would be a fairly expensive. I've had multiple people look at it and none can tell me exactly what it is that is bad so until me rebooting the system fails....I'm going with that.
