The personal details of about 106 million individuals across the US and Canada were stolen in a hack targeting Capital One systems, the company has revealed.
The announcement came after the alleged hacker was arrested on Monday.
According to Capital One, the data included names, addresses and phone numbers of people who applied for its credit card products.
But the hacker did not gain access to credit card account numbers, it said.
Capital One said in a statement released on Monday that the breach affected approximately 100 million in the US and 6 million in Canada.
The statement added that about 140,000 social security numbers and 80,000 linked bank account numbers were compromised in the US.

Can I get another $125?

At this point they should just release everyone’s and be done with it

Oh boy, if they cracked the subprime database they got a lot of info on people that probably shouldn't have credit cards.

And that 'could' be a good thing.

I doubt anyone’s info is secure anymore.

Everyone hurry up and document the hours of work you are going to do tonight "researching".
It will pay off later, trust me

My Capital One card has gotten hacked 3 times in the past 6 months. They issue a new number each time and it gets hacked again. I even gave them and the police the person's name (the first time it happened because Einstein had used their name and address to order from NIKE) and they did NOTHING. After the 3rd time, I told them to close the account and cut up the card. Morons!

That's kind of my take on identity theft or if my account gets 'hacked', the joke will be on them!

Well at least they couldn’t get any money from me.
Just had the usual 3.50 in that bank account.
Note: I have money elsewhere not just in Crapital One.

I was hacked once and the police told me that they don't even try to go after them.

Yeap, that's what they told me too. And that's just one of the reasons this kind of crap continues. I filed a police report anyway.

My sister actually had her Capital One cards used in another state this weekend.
I guess we have out grown the old tried and true 16 digit card number, CCV codes and expiration dates used to verify a card for online purchases.

Yep. “Victimless Crime” and not worth their time. Yet they have time to do in-depth undercover investigations of low level marijuana dealers.

What's in your wallet?

My card information wasn't grabbed in an online purchase. It was hacked at a bar in Breckinridge. All the card information was sold online and the card cloned in Florida. I had it happen to me again with my ATM card while in Cameroon. They had an extra scanner on the card slot. They cloned that one fast. In less than an hour there was almost $10k of charges on my account in Illinois.

From the Wall Street Journal:

The announcement came the same day the alleged hacker, Paige A. Thompson, was arrested by federal agents in Seattle.
The bulk of the exposed data involves information submitted by customers and small businesses in their applications for Capital One credit cards from 2005 through early 2019, the bank said. The information included addresses, dates of birth and self-reported income.
The breach compromised approximately 140,000 Social Security numbers and 80,000 bank account numbers, as well as some customers’ credit scores and transaction data, according to the bank.
Ms. Thompson is a former employee of Amazon Web Services Inc., the cloud-computing division of Amazon.com Inc., according to people familiar with the matter. The criminal complaint says Ms. Thompson’s resume showed she worked at a cloud-computing company, which the government didn’t identify by name, as a systems engineer from 2015 to 2016.
Investigators accuse Ms. Thompson of breaking into the servers that Capital One rented from the cloud-computing company to steal customer data from the bank. Ms. Thompson, who is charged with one count of computer fraud and abuse, allegedly accessed the bank’s data through a misconfigured firewall.

Here could be a potential solution to the credit card fraud problem.
Instead to printing a CCV code, replace it with a RSA Secure ID chip/display that is changing every 5 minutes. The number cycle gets updated each time it is used at an ATM that way if someone manages a way to clone the card and the RSA sequence it will be changed. If you need a permanent number, you can use the banking app to authorize certain purchases with a unique RSA code. That way Subscriptions could still be charged, but not used for general purchases.
