Can't shake a cough

OT doctors, getting somewhat concerned. Long story short, developed a bad cough in mid-July. Took over the counter medication (Mucinex, Delsym, NyQuil) and didn't get any relief. Finally went to the doctor in late August and he prescribed an antibiotic (Z-Pack) and a cough medicine (in bed, don't know name right now) and said I should be better.
I did improve, however it is back again. When I first developed my cough, it was productive, then it went dry and now I am starting to feel build up in my chest. My chest sounded clear to doctor, however he did not X-Ray during my visit.
Now, I am starting to experience shortness of breath as well, something I have not experienced before. My wife, is upset with me, because I haven't gone back since, mainly because of my travel / work schedule and partly because I am stubborn.
Aside from going back to the doctor, which I will, what else can I be doing until I get an appointment?

Have you been paying attention to these illnesses spreading around the SE?

I think I had this a few years ago. Just couldn't shake it.
Doc gave me the inhaler that you see on TV commercial where the elephant is sitting on your chest. Forgot the name.

Could it be walking pneumonia?
Posted on 9/10/14 at 11:53 pm to matthew25
I am hopeful that it isn't anything more than a persistent cough. Sitting in bed right now and having shortness of breath isn't helping my situation.

I read the symptoms for walking pneumonia and I have never had fever, chills, sore throat or tiredness,
The only thing I have had are violent coughing spells.

I've never smoked or hang around people that do. I do my best to avoid inhaling anything that could be bad for me.

Keep us informed. I know a couple of other people who have the same symptoms. Both told me that at times their ability to breath is constricted severely. One of them said that he is taking medicine for indigestion and that is helping. He thinks acid reflux could be part of the problem.

Check into this Will
Top 3 reasons for chronic cough are:
Asthma (inhaler could help regardless)
Post-nasal drip (OTC allergy med - Zyrtec, Allegra)
Reflux (need PPI - Prilosec, Nexium)
