That's no words anyone wants to hear and you are living it. There are no words that I can say that will comfort you but God Bless you.

Lost my FIL and my grandfather the last year to cancer

I'm with ya, dude. My FIL died in March '15 from lung cancer; my Dad died exactly 30 days later from liver/kidney failure stemming from alcoholism.

I actually started a thread on here nearly a year ago celebrating that a close family friend had beaten it. About six weeks later she passed from a new set of super aggressive tumors. It's a cruel thing.
Jesus. Damn.

I tell myself it's because people are living longer and have to die of something. Only way I can really accept it.

Just wish it wasn't something so terrible to have to go thru/watch loves ones go thru.

Everyone I have lost has been in their 50's or 60's due to cancer. I hope I make it well past my sixties because everyone I have lost had so much more life to live.

Couldn't imagine losing someone in their 30's to this horrible disease but the OB lost a good one a few years ago. I'm pretty sure his name was Josey Wells on here but that was about the time I started posting regularly on TD OB. They could chime in more about it but I see his name on there quite a bit.

CLL. Chronic Lympocytic Leukemia. It's not that aggressive, not really curable though. You can go 20 years without treatment or you can get really sick and....well, you know.

Worst part is not knowing whats coming but maybe it isn't that bad in the short term. Definitely changes your perspective on things.

Damn I'm sorry to hear that. You are one of my favorite posters here and I always enjoy your pictures. I've lost way too many family members and friends to cancer.

I plan on being around for a long time...

I've beaten alcohol, so this isn't that big of a deal.

We were never under the impression it wasn't "curable" though

Just have been told if and when he does need treatment they'd evaluate chemo or maybe a bone marrow transplant if needed

Keep fighting the good fight my man

Side note: your pics and stories of life in Alaska have inspired me to plan a bucket list type of trip up that way. Hopefully I'll make it up there one day

Just do it. Raft the Tatshenshini, explore the ice caves, surf Yakutat, fly fish the Situk. It's an amazing place with more than you can do in a lifetime.

Well, that's the chronic part. You can live with it a long time and not need treatment. Treatment can keep it from getting worse and put it in remission but it will likely come back again. It's pretty non aggressive though, as opposed to acute cancer.

quote:

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is rarely able to be cured. Still, most people live for many years with the disease. Some people with CLL can live for years without treatment, but most eventually need to be treated. Most people with CLL are treated on and off for years. Treatment may stop for a while, but it never really ends. Learning to live with cancer that does not go away can be difficult and very stressful.

quote:

Treatment of CLL is not expected to cure the disease. This means that even if there are no signs of leukemia after treatment (known as a complete remission), the leukemia is likely to come back again (recur) at some point. Further treatment will depend on what treatments you've had before, how long it's been since treatment, and your overall health

Some of the new drugs may have a more permanent affect but there hasn't been enough time to tell since they've only been available for a few years.

A poster here mentioned their mom was diagnosed about a year ago and was looking at surgery/treatment in Houston I believe. I don't recall ever seeing any updates, and I don't want to say their name in case they prefer privacy.

If you happen to read this thread, I hope your mom is doing well.

I'll never forget last August going through my FIl's stuff and seeing hand written thank you letters from Kirk Herbstreet. My FIL is the kind of person who kept everything. There wasn't a dry eye going through the AOL emails or the saved voice mails of the little tapes he saved of the kids leaving him voicemails on those small recordings. My wife and my BIL were both all state athletes at Centerville back in the day. My FIL put together the local sports section for the highschool paper and my BIL and Herbstreet played together on those teams. I still give my wife shite about having a crush on Herbie when he's on game day She used to tell me how good he looked running on that Nintendo power pad

One other story about my FIL keeping all kinds of shite happened when we moved into our house in Charlotte NC back in 2006. Some how we ended up with a few of his storage totes from back in the day and low and behold we found the gold mine! When my wife was off picking out blinds and a few of us were moving into the new house we discovered a tote with her highschool cheerleading things! At the time it was me, her brother, the GM of the place she worked and a few management MT's moving things in! By chance we checked a box that had all kinds of good stuff in it from here Dad and when she came home one of us squeezed into her cheerleading outfit and the rest were wearing her cheerleading buttons with her picture on it playing football in front of the house

I'm a survivor. It sucks indeed. I can not thank you enough for the fund raising you and your company have done. I am sorry for your loss. May God bless you.
