For those of you that don't know, Hoke Gajan has cancer. Very sad and I hope he can pull through, I couldn't imagine what I would do if my father, or someone that close to me were diagnosed and being faced with possible losing them.

BUT...

So they are having Hoke Fest in Madisonville this weekend to raise money for his cancer treatment, which I know is very expensive. I am all about raising money for cancer research and other medical research, typically I donate to the Jimmy V foundation. I'm not saying Hoke is rich, but he is certainly not poor. Thousands of less fortunate people get bad cancer diagnosis (not sure what the plural of that is) daily. Obviously it is up to each person and family of that person how they would like to proceed. I don't how much insurance covers, but it does cover some, if not all, unless, i presume, it is an experimental treatment. I guess my question is, is it in poor taste to have this fundraiser specifically for Hoke and not for cancer research in general?

Now this whole thing may have been, actually probably was, thrown together by others and not the Gajans. But basically, the way I see it is that they are using his "celebrity" factor to raise money for him when if anyone else who isn't a public figure wouldn't have this same luxury. Good for them though, and I hope whatever money is raised is used to help Hoke pull through. I know if my life was on the line and I needed a few hundred grand to survive and I had this opportunity I would use it as well.

Honestly I prefer giving money to people on hard times such as dealing with cancer ALS or some other act of God that couldn't be prevented. Especially since every time you turn around you hear shite like what we recently heard about Wounded Warrior or like Susan B Komen supporting the baby killers.

That being said I carry critical illness insurance on myself for next to nothing monthly. Mother frickers should insure their family against such things if they don't have the cash on hand to pay for it out of pocket.

As long as it's used for the stated purpose, I don't have an issue with it. Lots of stuff can go into cancer treatment besides office visits, meds, hospitalization that insurance does not cover. It can get out of hand very quickly.

I was part of a cancer benefit for my best friend that succumbed to cancer in 2013. This event raised money for the family to offset medical expenses as well as offer an opportunity for the children to be in a much better place later in life, even though their father would not be around. This event was the most surreal thing I've witnessed and showcased the humanity that is left in the world. There was an epic thread about this event on the Outdoot Board. RIP EJW.

Prayers to Hoke and his family though this arduous journey. My heart goes out to anyone that has to battle cancer.

Hoke probably doesn't make anywhere near what you think.

He also has an extremely, extremely rare cancer that can be debilitating, and he has had some serious complications (bones breaking).

I'm sure he needs a lot of help.

yep, know exactly what you are talking about and was part of that as well

for clarification, I will be attending and contributing money to the Gajan's cause as well

with so much outrage on this board about gofundme's and what not, was curious where this fit in

One of my brothers is at his end. Been fighting cancer 6 years. He is now 63 and everything he worked for in his life is gone. They even sold there house to pay for treatments.

I did a fund raiser for him and I really need to do another. My other brother and sisters and myself do what we can to help them every month. Just wished I could do more.

On a side note. Today marks my oldest brothers death. Agent Orange killed him. Cancer ate him away at 40 years old.

My mother dies of cancer some 10 years ago. Final expenses topped $1M. My father paid less than $1k out-of-pocket. Every prayer for my mother was followed with a prayer thanking the good Lord for the insurance we had.

I would rather give to people. I worked for nonprofit before. I saw how much was wasted.

I have had to fight cancer twice the last 5 years. Luckily, we had insurance with a $2500 deductible that paid out 100% after the deductible. My bills in total were over $150k.

We were fortunate that we did not have to ask for financial help. My request of friends was to bring pre cooked meals that my wife could put in the freezer to alleviate some of the stress on her during my hospital stay. I was inpatient for over 80 days over 4 months.
And the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society paid for my deductible. Great charity.

The best advice I have to give to anyone who has the opportunity is to get the Aflac cancer coverage. It is relatively inexpensive and it was a major benefit for my family during the battle. The second time we ended up getting paid out over $50k by Aflac over 4 months. If our insurance only covered 80% it would have covered what I owed with over $20k left over. Since our policy paid out 100%, it became a down payment on a new house.
