I think I remember Sinead O'Connor being cancelled for ripping up the picture of the Pope on SNL before the Dixie Chicks were cancelled

Always felt like there's some kind of devolution that was going on through the years from the time of the hipsters, to SJW's, then to cancel culture..
It's in there somewhere, in that postmod-ish, subverting, mind virus that has grown over recent years. Trump really did a number on said group(TDS) by creating a singular external nemesis, and coupled with social media, this allowed it to spread more rapidly and effectively, culminating in the MeToo/Woke era of last 2-3 years.
So, say Trump never made it to office, I think we still see a natural transition of this culture but over a more extended time period. shite ideas will still play out at some point but because of Trump, it's like he synchronized this process

And the Beatles caught a lot of flak for saying they were bigger than Jesus, but certain people getting outraged and boycotting isn't quite the same as current cancel culture.

Conservatives like to blame liberals but the 1st example I can think of were The Dixie Chicks in the early 2000's (now The Chicks due to cc).
Can you explain what you think happened with this?

Everyone tried to cancel Forest Gump but he smacked that right back at them with his flexolite ping pong paddle

Venues not allowing certain comedians is freedom of association. Don’t see a problem with that.
The problem is when it’s sold out and then they cancel it at the last minute. Still wouldn’t call that cancel culture. Cancel culture is witch hunting random people and trying to get them fired from their job via twitter.

cool so it fits your own definition of cancel culture
Enough people didn't want to listen, causing their album sales to plummet.
quote:So a boycott has to be 100%?
unless, of course, you think 100% of country fans called stations and complained
I mean. . .what?

No. Radio stations announced that they would not play Dixie Chicks immediately after it happened. It had nothing to do with album sales.

Country radio stations decided that nobody should hear Dixie Chicks. It wasn't a boycott. It was the very definition of "cancel culture"
Its not a big deal, so no idea why you are fighting against this

Tipper Gore (that's Al Gore's wife), was responsible for the movement that was to censor music. Naturally, this was blamed on Conservatives.

quote:that's admittedly closer to Canceling. However, it was still rogue DJs trying to force it on a demographic that did not want to hear it.
If corps just tried to push it onto the stations, why were there DJs on those stations fired for playing Dixie Chicks?
These people would change the channel.
That is why DJs were fired.

Are the Dixie Chicks still allowed to record music and tour? If so, they were not canceled at all.
You know there's a HUGE difference here. Why not call it out?

Posted on 8/23/22 at 4:02 pm to Salmon
quote:I mean both occurred simultaneously.
Radio stations announced that they would not play Dixie Chicks immediately after it happened. It had nothing to do with album sales.
People were throwing albums in the trash.
Still not a canceling, if station owners make a decision independently.

Both happened at the same time.
