Canal street IS a third world country.

And there is definitely a marked drop in the quality of "tourists" this town is welcoming of late
I’ve noticed this in 3 of the last 4 places I’ve been. The only exception being Chicago, and that’s only because it was my first time there. Either I’m getting older or places are so cheap right now due to Covid that the trashballs are out and about.
I’m assuming it’s a combination of stimulus money and hotels / airlines being desperate for deals.

The tourism economy - which is like 70% of the city's economy - has basically been shut down for 16 months. Tourists aren't coming in... they aren't coming to restaurants and staying at hotels. Local people aren't working (but still getting paid).
With the lack of tourists filling the streets, and no jobs for the locals to go to, they are filling them, and they aren't nearly as desierable as the tourists.
Meanwhile... the cops are dealing with bigger issues than chasing off the increasing number of homeless.

Canal street is truly a mess. The city has pushed a lot of corridors for redevelopment (broad street, freret street, OC Haley) and spends a ton of money for the DDD folks. But the next mayor needs to make canal street and the two blocks on either side of canal street a major emphasis. A mini Marshall project to take it back from the street urchins.

So... the city needs to kill Motwani and buy up all his property? That's the only way you change it.

And to think it used to be promoted as “World Famous Canal St”.
As a young teen I would go check out the guitars at Werlein’s, 605 Canal.

NOLA is a Third World country. Louisiana not far behind. I’m glad we moved us and our kids out in 1984. I used to be proud of my heritage. Now just disappointed/embarrassed.

I did that before Katrina but had not done it since I moved back in 2012.
Last fall, I started doing that again.

I look both ways. As long as no car is coming, I run the light. No cop is going to pull you over. If they do, I just tell them look at me I am not stopping in this area. Ill gladly take the ticket if he wants to write it

I spent the day in New Orleans on Saturday (didn't even die), and I thought it was basically in the same condition that it was in when I moved away 4 years ago. Granted I didn't spend any time downtown (a short stop Mid-City, then Uptown for the rest of the day).

They're coming in now. I had friends visit from out of town this weekend. Went to pick them up from their hotel and we grabbed dinner. It was friggin' packed everywhere. The line at Cafe Du Monde Saturday was over 100 deep.

This past weekend we had some friends try to talk us into going to see Chappelle and Rogan in NO, they are clueless to the fact that the city has turned into a crime ridden shite hole. The plan is now to go and see them in Nashville instead, we used to love going there 10, 15, 20 years ago but no more, elections have consequences.
