They're not all clean cut with earpieces and suits. Some of them work undercover and look like regular joes.

This.
We have someone at our kids school that gets two SS guys and they are never in the suits. Pretty interesting to watch them try to follow him around, but keep their distance and let him do his family thing and socialize at various events.
I know it's part of the job you accept as a high profile person, but the stories about them going on vacation and never being alone just seems like it would get to be a pain in the arse.
