How old is your tank setup? I hardly do any water changes in either of mine unless needed.

wanna see ultimate convenience?
RO/DI filter on wall,50 gallon aerated drum full of Saltwater. Drain in floor under tank for water changes.
I have this set up in the back of my office building in an old room where a processor used to reside.

Awesome. Another web site is Reef Central, lots of info on the board. I setup a 150G reef tank using Tampa Bay Saltwater who has his own section on the board. Amazing stuff.
Check them out if you have questions or need something ID'd .

I used "The Package" from them for my 300 gallon. It's expensive as frick, but the results are amazing. Lots of little critters that came unexpected with it.

You should look at a Dragon Goby. Looks like a little sea bass. He will clean the frick out of your sand like you wouldn't believe. He is the ONLY thing I have gotten to effectively clean my sand without making a huge God awful mess like other sand sifting gobys.

Yes expensive but worth every penny.

don't see a reason to do any water changes with mine when Nitrates are that low all of the time.
Without the bio-load from fish you wont see many nitrates. Especially if you aren't feeding the corals. You should be fine without water changes until you start adding more corals. Not sure if you plan to start dosing but the corals will pull certain things from the water that are not replenished with RO. You have a pretty nice setup there so take your time adding and dont skimp on the fail safes.
I had a daylight bulb go out last week and I was gone over the weekend. Fortunately the Actinics kept everyone alive but not having a spare and the 2 days that it took to get one in (LFS didnt have it either) could have bleached the tank. All of that over a $29 bulb!
A lot of people don't realize how delicate these systems are but with a little maintenance every few days, you can have an amazing reef in your living room.

quote:well if you are planning on keeping corals, you need to do water changes to replenish trace elements.
So much so that i don't even do water changes anymore. Just keep adding RO/DI water.

It's a shame you aren't local. I would love a few of those frags!
I added my first fish (Ocellaris Clown), yesterday. Everything else is corals and inverts.

I had a mated pair of Clowns but one jumped out of the frickin tank now the only clown has decided to take up the shrimp as his pet. Damn fish feeds the shrimp and the shrimp will jump on him and clean him( symbiotic)
