All materials eventually degrade down and corrode or erode into dust with one exception: gold. Gold is eternal. It is inert, it does not corrode nor does it break down. That is why it was always a store of value and medium of exchange. Wood rots, food spoils, iron rusts, silver corrodes, stone erodes , gold persists.

Plastics are hydrocarbons,some types break down quicker than others. Some plastics break down quickly if exposed to sunlight.Most metals can be recycled,if fact when new steel is made some scrap steel is added to the mix.
