We'd all have these surnames if it wasn't for the highways and interstates. Thanks Ike!

Good many Beauchamps in Avoyelles Parish
They must not be a very nomadic bunch if it’s an uncommon one outside of Avoyelles.

Your list is shite, no Couvillion.

Beauchamps I've never heard of this one in all my years in LA. Granted most was spent in Lafayette and BR.
There was a large family that went to Woodlawn during most of the 80’s and early 90’s. They spelled it Beauchamp(no “s” at the end). Can’t remember all their names, but there was like 5 boys and a girl in the family. One of the younger sons Todd graduated with me in ‘88. Think they had some cousins that went to Broadmoor around the same time as well. They pronounced it Beecham.

My grandfather told me that when Acadians we're pushed from Canada they had to sign paperwork in America. These immigrants/refugees couldn't spell so they'd "make their mark" and apply an "X". That's how the x ended up at the end of Cajun surnames.
Not sure how factual that is but it makes sense

Decuir, my moms maiden name.
The surname of DECUIR was of French origin, a locational name 'the dweller at the court' a large mansion, from residence or employment therein. Occupational surnames originally denoted the actual occupation followed by the individual.

Interesting how it breaks down by parish. I'd love to see that list.
I grew up in Lafayette, which seems thick with folks named Guidry, Hebert, Landry, Boudreau (with and without x), Cormier, Guilbeau, Thibodaux (mostly with the x), Broussard, Arceneaux. These list is without research, and represents number of encounters (and relatives) I recall.
Not participating in the French vs Acadian discussion.
