I go either way, buttons are looked upon as more casual.
Also, I'm surprised no one hasn't mentioned this, but you should never wear a tie and a shirt with an emblem/monogram on it as shown in one of your pictures.

Magnetic collar stays. They are awesome. Highly recommend.

NOPE, they are $40. For $16 total from Amazon I bought 16 stainless steel collars stays in 4 different sizes and a pack of round stainless steel magnets. It's the same thing but you get more at half the price

Buttons when not wearing a tie and collar stays with ties.
Sport coats doesn't really matter. Suit jackets, no buttons

100% of time point or spread with suit
80% of time point with sportcoat and tie
80% of time button down with sportcoat sans tie
99% of the time button down with no jacket

Button downs are strictly casual for me, but wear what you want.
If it looks stupid today, tomorrow it will be all the rage.
I can't wait for the giant collar, leisure suit look of 1972 to come back. Nothing like a good satin floral print with huge collar, lime green waffle polyester leisure suit, and white platform shoes/belt combo.
