An affluent, largely white and generally conservative Atlanta neighborhood—tired of rising crime and a local government that’s politically its opposite—is taking steps to breakaway from the state’s largest city. Dubbed Buckixt, residents of Buckhead are petitioning the Georgia legislature to incorporate as a separate municipality called Buckhead City, carving off 20% of Atlanta’s population. Much like the ongoing debate in Baton Rouge, there are questions about Buckhead’s solvency as a city, its impact on Atlanta’s government and how it would manage municipal services

ATL will do everything in its power to prevent this from happening - whether or not above board.

I love how that's always the question. Nobody ever wonders if the 70% ghetto area is solvent. It's only when the nice area gets tired of supporting the rest that they get fiscally concerned.

Psst...contracts with private companies that maintain efficiency and cut bloat when they're not dealing with crooked Atlanta riff raff.

So is this an actual break away from Atlanta or are they not currently part of Atlanta's city limits?

I went back through my old neighborhood (we moved this time last year) over the weekend and there were Buckhead cityhood signs everywhere. The Buckhead city movement isn't new, but I am surprised at the traction. Still not likely, of course. Too many business interests that will put their finger on the scale.

The mayoral debate the other night discussed it, and I was a little surprised that the candidates weren't disregarding it as merely racist, etc. The approaches to the question convinced me they've got a little bit of concern it could continue to gain momentum.

Unlike St George in Louisiana, Buckhead is actually inside of a city currently and would have to de-annex themselves first.

It’s a different situation. But I support their efforts. I support any community that wants to stay put and improve their fortunes instead of selling their homes and moving away.

This is an actual COA breakaway, unlike Dunwoody/Sandy Springs/Brookhaven.

Everybody likes the idea of liberalism. It’s just the effects of liberalism in place they want to avoid like the plague.

Interesting, I wish them luck in trying to make a better community. As long as they go through the proper channels and do everything within the law. From what it sounds like, I'm sure Atlanta will want to keep one of their cash cows that most likely subsidizes poorer areas of the city.

This will be denied to it being racist and white flight.

I really hope this doesn't happen. It might be good for Buckhead. It's never good to Balkanize a metropolitan area, though. At best, if you do this, you're hoping for a walled paradise in a wasteland.

COA isn't giving them an alternative. You rarely (until very recently) heard COA people saying "The first thing we need to do is fix the problem with Buckhead citizens feeling unrepresented or not heard."
