I'm not clear on whether it was a hot/active crime scene, meaning the suspect was at large in that area. If so, all this shite is ridiculous.

Deadly use of force standards applied to dogs, roaming wild and attacking, no collar, impeding a police investigation, is fricking bullshite.

Having been attacked by a bull mastiff in my own neighborhood, I applaud the officer for waiting that long to shot. My daughter, wife and myself were attacked by 2 bull mastiffs that my neighbor had as guard dogs. My daughter alone had over $100k in medical expenses. I don't go outside without my concealed weapon and will not hesitate to shot a dog that acts like the dog in this video.

Good shot!

frick irresponsible dog owners.

Im under the assumption he responded to a report of a burglary. Not one in progress but to take the report of one. That makes me think there isn't an existing emergency that wouldn't allow him to get in his patrol car and ask for dispatch to contact animal control and the homeowner. Ive been in this situation and always contacted the complainant / homeowner to let them know im outside but not getting out of my car until the dogs are restrained. Now, had this been a domestic where the issue is pressing and I need to get to the victim without delay then that changes things.

Yes, that is the prime issue.

I would have walked right up to those two.

The same. I didn't view those dogs as aggressive. They were acting in more of a defensive nature. They retreated at least once when they felt like they had pushed the threat back far enough. That officer was clearly afraid of dogs. The more agitated he got, the more they responded to that. I really think a calmer officer that knew how to interact with dogs would have lead to a completely different outcome.

Now, let's talk about the fact that the officer fired that shot toward at least three houses with unknown occupancy. That's completely idiotic and why he should be suspended, more so than for the dogs.

On the flip side, those dogs should have never been loose and I don't like pitbulls.

In the end, it was bad policing, but that's my thoughts on the matter.

If you own a pit, put them up. If you don't have a fence, then don't have a pit.

Uh, the smart ones do. I've got a dog bag with my stuff. Food, disposable bowls, water, etc...

I'm a dog person though.

He's a fricking moron evidently. Those dogs were very aggressive and hindered his ability to respond to the call appropriately.

No he (chief) wasn't. And no those dogs weren't either. The dogs were responding to a threat on private property and they never left the property. When the cop backed up so did the dogs. The cop needs to lose his job. He clearly cannot handle a stressful situation as this wasn't anywhere close to a threat. Striking your taser at the animal is going to agitate it. Plus had the dogs left the property they were defending if you hit them with the mace they are tucking tail and running away. Hell the best way to deal with a dog that is trying to bite is to pour water on its nose.

TL:DR Cop was in the wrong. Rare case of pit not in the wrong.

This.

I really think a pat on his leg with a "Hey pups" would have had those dogs completely calm.

He was never close enough for mace. If a dog is maced it will run away howling. Those dogs were never maced. All he did with the Taser was spark it at the dogs from 10 feet away. The only thing he fired at the dog was his pistol.

This

You can look at this in a vacuum and say "oh well its just a couple of pits", or maybe you should consider that this guy might not be fit to carry a weapon.

If he can't diffuse a situation with 2 dogs appropriately, how will he handle a serious situation. I'm not saying he should be fired, but there needs to be disciplinary action.

The main issue I have is that he had multiple instances to retreat and get in his car. The taser seemed to be pissing them off more than anything.

And don't tell me he was scared

You don't say "aww frick it" right before you shoot something if you are scared.

"Aww frick it" means "I don't feel like dealing with this situation appropriately because I don't feel like I should have to get back in my car or be inconvenienced, so I am just going to kill this dog"

Maybe not the best person to be carrying a gun around all day

He would have never survived being a mail carrier or paper boy in the 60s, I had run ins with dogs like this almost daily delivering newspapers as a kid.
