BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - On June 8, the Baton Rouge Police Department plans to honor the first black officers to work in their department. June 8 marks the 55th anniversary of when those officers were hired back in 1963. Chief Murphy Paul and his staff have invited retirees who worked with these officers to talk about how the city and BRPD has grown since then.

They should talk about how it will decline back to those original numbers in record time if current leadership remains in place much longer

Because that's what the PD needs to focus on right now.

Anything to distract from Baton Rouge's murder/shooting-per-day, Murph!

I would like to add a few categories to consider further down the line after we honor these heroes:

1st women officers
1st black women officer
1st gay officers
1st transgender officers
1st legless officers
1st fat officers

ETA: I like the police. My cousin was killed in the line of duty in Baton Rouge. They have my respect.

Why?

I thought they wanted to be treated equally.

You apparently just missed the BRPD honoring black police officers for the color of their skin. That is literally a display of obsession with race.

They bothering to figure out how to hire any new officers?

I don’t give a frick if they are white, Black, transsexual Pacific Islander, or what as long as they are competent.

The interesting part to me is the Chief and the Mayor have zero awareness of the optics of doing things like this. I get that they feel like it is overdue and things like this need to be recognized but doing it first thing when you get in power just looks like bad. It takes away from the significance and makes people react exactly as seen in this thread. This shite ain’t hard politically speaking. Get a handle on the crime rate NOW and have your little celebrations of Black this and Black that later.

Was this done on the 50th anniversary? if not then good they should be honored...if they were already honored than this is stupid and racist
