I locked on one of those latches and left it pumping while I ran into the station to buy something, the pump didn't automatically shut off and when I got out gas was pouring everywhere. At least 10 gallons went on the ground. Last time I ever left the pump unattended and that's probably why the station breaks those tabs off.

Then go to auto parts store and buy a replacement cap and keep in bed of truck.
Or if you can use a saw without cutting your fingers off, cut a piece of wood down to fit in there to hold it open.
If you are scared of the saw you could use some a velcro strap they they sell to keep electrical cords neat.

I use the tip of my glans penis. Although it is large, I can jam it in there to hold the lever. Uncomfortable as it is, it seems to be effective.
