A secondary school in northwestern England is barring expensive designer coats in an effort to eliminate “poverty-shaming” for students whose parents can’t afford the items.

About 46 percent of the school’s students are considered low-income, according to reports. For example, the school provides free sanitary products and limits backpacks to a certain type, so parents aren’t pressured to buy ones that are more expensive.

“They feel stigmatized, they feel left out, they feel inadequate,” Headteacher Rebekah Phillips told the Independent.

According to a YouGov survey, 68 percent of people surveyed approve of the school’s policy. Seventeen percent oppose it, and 15 percent indicated they are not sure.

Is this where we are headed, and what kind of world is that?

Again?! Damn they must really hate poverty shaming to ban these coats twice in a week.

Myself as well, but knowing how people here love to emulate Europe, I have to believe it’s right around the corner.

So the coat doesn't violate any of the established dress codes. It's based solely on the price of the item. Obviously this is in England but if this were in the US, would the company have any legal recourse? Probably not worth it so this is more of an academic question but if public institutions start enacting dress codes based on cost alone how is that fair in a free market economy?

Really hope the school body can band together and overcome this egregious injustice.

They already do it here but they don't tell you it's because of cost.

When schools have a dress code, (for example all boys have to wear khakis and white knit shirt) a lot of times the only reason is because they don't want the poorer students to feel inferior.

Obviously this isn't the case for all schools but I think it is for more than you would think.

Lots of kids at my kid’s school have Canada Goose or Moncler jackets. On the playground, the kids throw the expensive jackets in the same pile as the shitty jackets. It’s the moms who care about this shite. The kids don’t care.

Is this new? My school banned us from wearing any sort of clothing with a logo on it (outside of shoes).

Exactly. This is why there are strict guidelines on school uniforms.

I sort of agree with it.....this way kids aren't obsessed with the latest shite and some kids feel bad that his parents can't afford it.
