That part of NE Alabama if I remember correctly has more caves per square mile than anywhere else on earth.
It's one gigantic Karst formation, and the reason why the US National Speleological Society is HQ'd in Huntsville.
Got to know some of the members while in college, and was able to explore a bunch of caves not accessible to the public. Really cool experience.

There's an actual scientific reason for this. And no, you're not imagining it when you think the smoke from the campfire is following you. Essentially, wherever you sit or stand around a fire you block any breeze coming from that direction and create a small pocket of stagnant air in relation to the other air around you. The smoke is going to tend toward that direction until it rises above your head and back into circulating air. Best way to avoid it is to have a fat friend with you and make then stand on the other side so there's more calm air around them and they get all the smoke.
