What are some quality backpacks with a bladder that I can fill with water like a camelbak but with more pockets and a cheaper price?

you could just get a bladder with a straw and put it in a normal backpack if price is really the issue.

This is kinda one of those things thats worth the money you pay for it. That Camelbak Mule @ $100 is pretty darn handy.

I have had a mule, a hawg, and a few assorted cheap ones. The cheap ones have shitty straps that dig into your shoulders, don't distribute the weight well at all, don't take advantage of storage space, the zippers suck, and the mouthpieces are crap. I think I still have one cheap one somewhere, but the hawg and mule are both 15+ years old and still in perfect shape. I used the mule for work for basically a year and a half straight, 5-6 days a week. Now, it is normally in my truck full of water instead of me bringing water bottles everywhere.

Bottom line, unless you plan on only using the thing a few times, you get what you pay for

I'm holding out for Camlbak to release one that you wear like a front facing fanny pack.

The Camltoe.

Camelback is great until you take cover in as pile of Iraqi cow manure & can't get water because the drinking valve is covered in cow shite. Then you roll over & the damn bladder bursts. Now your all wet. And covered in Iraqi cow shite. And thirsy as frick.

Go with the canteen.

This.

Also: What are you trying to accomplish when using this hydration system? Are you going for daily runs or month long backpacking trips?

Here's what I use for a backpack and water storage:

Gossamer Gear Mariposa 60 Lightweight Backpack <--I have an older version than pictured here.

MSR Dromedary Hydration Bag <-- with a 10 liter volume and a much thicker and more durable skin than the (imho) easy-to-pop plastic sold by Camelbak and Platypus, the MSR Dromedary is a win.

MSR Hydration Kit <-- I don't always use the cord to drink (sometimes I'm just storing water in the dromedary) but it's nice to have.

I have an old Mule or Hawg that gave me many good years of service. I have a Motherlode I still use as a backpack, even though I've never used the hydration bladder. That's how much I like their packs.
