Random convo that we had while drinking last night. Why doesn’t BR have nice suburbs like other medium sized southern cities? Birmingham has Mountain Brook, Mobile has the Eastern Shore, etc. Thoughts?

Jackson, MS has Madison which is very nice.

I’ve often wondered why St. Francisville hasn’t developed into a burgeoning suburb.

A few old money families own majority of the land up there and will do whatever it takes to make sure it doesn’t happen.

It's a bit far.

This is an interesting topic. I guess the 2016 flood reset a lot of people's ideas on where to move outsidethe city. I've heard Gonzalez and Prairieville are nice?

It takes money to build a nice infrastructure, and this area doesn’t want to spend. We sprawl rather than plan.

Yup. St Francisville could be similar to somewhere like Fairhope.

Also local politics play a major role.

They’re full of clusters of subdivisions that don’t connect to each other, and two lane roads with no shoulders. It’s safer than BR, but I wouldn’t call them nice compared to actual nice suburbs in other states.

The AP tax structure doesn’t allow for the “nice” suburban elements like good parks and roads without ditches.

AP voters have placed an emphasis to spend their property taxes on their schools and I certainly do not blame them.

Another thing is that the private school attendance is so high among the upper middle class and wealthy in this area. A lot of those people live in BR.

Forced busing of kids to terrible inner city schools, and busing of inner city kids to outer areas; all in the name of desegregation.

Geography limits too. North BR is a wasteland, and the west side is blocked by traffic on the new bridge.

The Mall of Louisiana was built outside the city limits. So was the BRGH, the Woman’s Hospital, Perkins Rowe, CCL, Santa Maria, Shenandoah, and the UClub.
