I've been weighing the pros and cons of moving back to Baton Rouge from Nashville for a couple years now and this would be a big "pro" for my wife and I.

Not enough to sway us, but certainly would be a good thing about Baton Rouge when weighing options.

So you'll need 40 uber cars waiting at the train station every time the train arrives in Baton Rouge.

This service will likely take 2.5-3 hours to travel from BR/Nola. I'd rather drive

Is that what they are estimating? Because the times were 90 minutes.

Why? It works very well for about the same distance between LA and San Diego.

I figure if it's dialed back to meet population demand and tailored for labor needs(commuter rates and packages for plant folks along the corridor), this could be VERY good for the area in terms of developing more of a smaller-scale example of a conurbation than just two cities connected by I-10.

Exactly.

They would just have to have a commitment to security, especially at night. Put rent-a-cops all over it and video cameras. That wouldn't be that expensive.

If they connect it to Lafayette and put stops at Bass Pro and Cabela's, I'll never drive over the Basin bridge again.

Not Baton Rouge's airport. And these train stations aren't going to be the size of an airport either.

at slightly more than $260 million

If it ever happened I'd put the over/under on 4 times that amount and take the over.

To me this is a major major thing as well.

Most major tourist cities have a rail link from the Airport to downtown. Would be a big benefit to Nola.

you'll have another big fight with the Taxi union a la Uber

I'm already working the numbers for me. Price of commuter package, beater car or Vespa parked at the Jefferson or Kenner Station, etc.

I'm in.

Hold on LA. How about starting by fixing the part of I-10 that basically bottlenecks the entire interstate into one lane going E on I-10.

Then maybe a loop around BR.

Then maybe you can kick tires on a train that is useless.

People in the South are so anti-mass transit it cracks me up.

This would be awesome if done correctly. They would just need it to have a reliable schedule, be affordable, and be secure.

The population is minuscule. There’s no “mass” anything.

Roads need fixing first.

why do you think it would take so long? there are 4 stops between the ends. Most commuter train lines in the US are class 4 which has a speed limit of 80mph. I've ridden on plenty of commuter trains in the NE and the west coast, they typically stop at each stop for a minute or two tops.
Let's even be super conservative and say 5min per stop; that would 20min at stops. The route can't be more than about 90mi long so either the train is going 30-40mph, waaay below the speed limit, or it will take significantly less time than you think.

I bet it would take about 1.5-1.75hrs from downtown BR to downtown NOLA.
