Zero tolerance laws are stupid.

Kyler Davies, a 7th grade student, found a pocket knife in his backpack. His mom tells us she bought the bag at Goodwill and never checked it. When her son found it, he told a counselor, and was suspended.

"He was turning it over like he was supposed to, and you are punishing him for doing what's right. So what it that teaching these kids?"
Zero tolerance laws are stupid.

Does he get to keep the knife?

Yes.

Common sense is no longer common.

Let's see how the OT turns this into a "sleeping with the teacher" thread.

Use your head.
-His name...
-Mother said they "bought" the backpack...not 'got'

I can understand if you're caught with it they can't just believe you didn't know it was there. But if you're in the process of turning it in that's idiotic.

Yes but it was bought at Goodwill. That evens the playing field for sure.

Davies says, per school rules, the incident meant an automatic one year suspension--a punishment that was later knocked down to 30 school days.
Students could rape other classmates during class and not get that much.

From Goodwill. That brings it into question.

What happened to the days of the person in Charge making judgement calls based on the particular circumstances?
Posted on 9/20/16 at 7:50 am to SG_Geaux
All these "zero tolerance" and "mandatory minimum sentencing" policies are so idiotic. Why do we have principles and judges if they're not there to apply some sort of judgement to each situation?

Yes, they are, but principals absolutely have the authority to override them and most choose not to (in deserving cases) because they are gaping vaginas.

I'm certainly no expert on such things, but they seem like more about projecting an image than being actually effective. Life is too complicated and nuanced for all or nothing policies.

In the 90's I often went to school with a truck full of guns and we played with pocket knives at recess. And no one batted an eye. Crazy

I have absolutely no tolerance for zero tolerance rules.

I remember in high school a teacher needing a knife for something and asking "one of you boys let me use your pocket knife". I think every boy in class reached in to their pocket for one. We would have more likely been suspended for not carrying a knife. Something no man should be without.

Every kid at that school should be on notice to never report anything to any authority

Exactly. What they have done is made the kids at that school less safe.
