What exactly are they doing besides replacing outdated drainage?

Letting mud half fill the new drainage pipes to recreate the impact of the old.

Are they paving the street with that ugly cement? Why not use brick pavers for a more authentic look?

cement is cheaper and easier to maintain. it really is that simple

brick is more aesthetic, but its a nightmare for maintenance and its $$$

I can only imagine how many pickpockets happen at night between these dark corridors.

Some Wisdom from Mayor Mitch Landrieu:

Need to do pump maintenance?
Wait until hurricane season.

Have a fire in a pump power station?
Don't call the fire department.

Need to remove statues in the middle of the night?
Do call the fire department.

Trying to restore faith in the city and citizens?
Make claims that all the best and brightest left years ago.

Make demands that the federal government needs to help our law enforcement problems?
Runs the feds out of town by being impossible to work with.

Run campaign on cleaning catch basins and drainage infrastructure?
Pretend you had no idea what was going in for 7 years and no idea how bad it was when those things fail.

Need to completely rip up and destroy bourbon street?
Give a nonbid contract to your cousin and then frick over all the business owners for Festival Season.

Best time to claim the city has no funding and no hope of coordinating manpower to fix drainage problems?
Wait till a couple months after you blow two million dollars and countless hours of manpower and brilliant multi-point coordination of multiple agencies and contactors to remove some statues no one cared about.

Not sure if people know who you are?
Make custom monogrammed black button down shirts to wear in New Orleans in August.

Does it still smell like used wine?

I will try to see if I can find it, but I actually read that in excavating the street, they unearthed drains from restaurants that were housing 100 years or so worth of grease and and other restaurant grime trapped in them that they suspected was likely a big cause of the unending stench on the street.

What's the purpose?

funneling pedestrians into narrow walkways makes it easier for the punch and rob artists to pen their victims in.

Scruffy thought it was just for beautification.

Didn't Mitch steal a bunch of funds from his federal grant to combat crime so he could fund the Bourbon St. project?

Pretty sure that's it in the first pic. Looks like they may only need to put one small layer on top when it's done.
