hat I'm getting my best shaves with Astra blades or Shark

Same here

Its all personal though. Depending on things like skin sensitivity and hair thickness. The best thing to do is buy a variety pack and see what is best for you.

I usually use a 5 blade razor, but I was curious. Tonight I went out and bought a safety razor. Wow! You guys were right. It gave me an awesome shave! No nicks, no cuts, no pulling the hairs, nothing but an amazing shave! It gave me one of the closet shaves I've ever had (better than the 5 blade razors!) It also left my skin feeling very, very smooth. I am hooked. I will never go back to my former razors anymore. From here on out it is nothing but a safety razor for me!

Indeed! I've seen razors with 6 freaking blades. Ridiculous.

Get a brush and shave soap.

Lathering up the soap directly on your face with the brush is one of life's little pleasures.

Shaving is a great example of how companies have used marketing to push a worse product on us over time.

People solved the problem of shaving hundreds of years ago. Straight razors are awesome but it takes time to get/keep them sharp enough. The safety razor came along and it was practically perfect. Safe, easy to change blades, adjustable. And the blade itself was the only disposable part and it was cheap.

Too cheap. So they convinced everyone the whole razor needed to be disposable to raise prices. Then they added 4 more blades and rubber grooves and lubrication strips to counteract their shitty foam in a can that we had traded our shaving soap for.

A cake of shaving soap in a mug will last 10x as long as a can of shaving cream, there are more scent options, and you don't get it all over your hands when you use a brush.

Wet shaving was superior in every way and cheaper in every way and somehow it was lost for years. I'm so glad it wasn't lost for good and its making a comeback.

I have problems using a safety razor in shaving under my nose near the nostrils. Leads to frequent cuts or unshaved whiskers.

Anyone have this problem?

And just hope you don't get bit by the bug and start buying antique razors.

Why would one buy antique razors?

Just be sure and use a good quality blade and it will make the experience even that much better.

What blades do you recommend?

the one thing my dad passed on to me was to teach me how to shave with a straight razor

Several years ago my wife (now ex-wife) and our kids bought me a set of very nice straight razors for Father's Day. I loved them.

I thought I lost them when my ex & I separated. But, just a couple of weeks ago I found them packed in a box I had not opened in years! They are still in excellent shape. I just need to buy a strop so I can strop them then use them again.

Sandalwood.

I didn't buy it or accessories because I wasn't sure if I'd like a safety razor. But, now that I know I do I will be buying that & the badger-hair brush.

What brand of safety razor do you use?

Great shave and I spend about $10 a year on razors.

I saw the prices on the blades. The prices are great. I love saving money!

Is there one safety razor that is superior to others?

I am sure there are vastly superior safety razors.

I was pricing them the other day before I decided to buy one. I saw prices range from a little over 2 bucks (amazon) all the way up to about $400.

I went a cheaper route. I bought this one:

I wasn't sure if I would like using a safety razor & didn't want to spend a lot on something I may only use once. The Van Der Hagen was only 18 bucks. So, if I didn't like I would not be out much money. But, I actually love shaving with a safety razor. Even though the one I got was cheap it gave me a great shave. It gave me, by far, a better shave than the Gillette Fusion 5 I had been using.

I'm going to keep the Van Der Hagen for a while. It gives a great shave. The blades are a good price too; less than 3 bucks for a box of five blades. Not bad.

Down the road I am sure I'll purchase one of the higher quality expensive safety razors. But, for right now the Van Der Hagen is working just fine. Only critique about it is that I wish the handle were a little longer. But, it is not bad at all. I recommend it.

Thinking of giving safety razors a try.

You definitely should give safety razors a try! YouTube has some great safety razor tutorials so you can learn how to shave with them without cutting yourself up.

If you do try the safety razor report back with your thoughts!

Amazing how good you feel after a nice shave

You got that right for sure! When I was done shaving & rinsed off my face it was just a really good feeling; soothing. Plus, it was a great shave; best I've since the old school barber man would shave you after a haircut.

It did not even sting as bad as it usually does when I put on my aftershave. I am hooked!

Anyone ever had a barber or other professional give them a shave? Worth it or waste?

Worth it. Warm to pleasantly hot towel. Really warm shaving lather on your face and a shave by a man who knows what he is doing. It is very relaxing.

That made a ton of sense. It is amazing how we are willfully ignorant to those tactics. Great post.
