shred maggots named Toto, Tifi and Kiki in a coffee grinder. (The researchers named the maggots to humanize them.)

Would be done inside of the first minute. If they gave me more, I would just keep shredding. Would sit quietly for the rest of the time.

Why would you humanize maggots when your Twitter/X history has plenty of times you couldn’t humanize humans.

I mean, they were named, so it's like you were putting a human in a coffee grinder? You monster.

yeah was this an option? If I get 15 quiet minutes in a day where I have no responsibility, I will either shut my eyes and breathe/meditate or fall asleep

ETA:

Grinding a disgusting maggot would've been fun though . frick a house fly and they're just house fly larvae. After the grinding, then I'd fall asleep.

Do people not know how to take a fricking nap? I’d be asleep in 5 minutes.

They would need to repeat this study several times with the same people to make any kind of decent conclusion.

You're putting people in a new environment with new things to do. Whether it's grinding maggots or slapping a strippers arse, most are going to opt to do the new thing if the other option is sitting in silence.

Have the same participants repeat the study with the same options and I bet more would choose to sit in silence.

Mindfulness is a lost art and was never particularly well-grounded in the U.S. to begin with. Frankly, we have a lot to learn from the East on this topic.

Getting physically shocked is unpleasant, but many people preferred it to the emotional discomfort of boredom.

If youre bored with your own thoughts there is no hope for you.

Read “Comfort Crisis”. It talked about boredom and how our lack of it stifles creativity and hurts our mental well being, among other topics the author covers.

. Yes. It’s actually demonstrable. People’s attention spans are drastically different from just 30 years ago.

The constant bombardment of stimuli is precisely why our society is in the state it’s in. Everyone is in a constant agitated and erratic state of mind. No one ever fully calms down or reflects. You can see it in everything from pop culture like music and TV to political opinions.

When’s the last time you sat quietly with a group of people with no electronics and had a simple (much less complex and in depth) human connection and discussion? With your spouse? Children? Parents? Friends? Coworkers?

When’s the last time you sat quietly by yourself with no distractions and simply meditated on your health both mental and physical.

Why are we so quick to attack people who suggest you try and tackle your problems with lifestyle changes rather than pills?

It’s getting harder and harder to escape the overwhelming noise and it’s actively changing our brain patterns beginning in childhood.
