Bomber Harris - War Criminal?

Bomber Harris has been linked to accusations of war crimes in new English Heritage information on the RAF officer’s statue.
The London statue of Bomber Command leader Sir Arthur Harris was reviewed by the charity after appearing on a hit list of statues following Black Lives Matter protests.
Harris's bombing campaign against Nazi Germany has been descried as a "war crime", according to information produced by the charity in March 2021.
His area bombing policy caused "massive loss of civilian life" during the Second World War, English Heritage has said in the new online material.
It states that the RAF Air Officer Commanding was "was unequivocal, blunt and uncompromising" in his pursuit of the bombing campaign.
New material on his statue outside the dedicated RAF church St Clement Danes on the Strand also outlines his involvement in colonial conflicts in Pakistan and Iraq.
English Heritage’s information states that one side of the debate on Harris regards his bombing as “a legitimate response to the ‘total war’ initiated by the Nazi” and that without it “the war would have lasted longer, with more lives lost”.
It adds: “Polarised opinions about Harris seem irreconcilable, and modern judgement is made difficult by our increasing distance from wartime conditions and from the people who endured them.”
There have long been calls in Germany for an official apology for the UK’s Second World War bombing campaign.

You cannot make cold judgements on decisions made during the heat of war time.
He was not a war criminal.
No

There were some seriously fricked up bombing campaigns by the Allies on civilian rich targets that didn't have the military impact to justify it (and our opposition did similar obviously). We are not innocent of this.
But hindsight on actions during war is a slippery slope and honestly kind of bullshite most of the time.

Some people are so quick to judge and forget the past. He took the white gloves off to deal with a tyrant so people today can call him a war criminal. War isn’t pretty and innocent lives will always be lost in war but without the 24 hour bombing campaign from the U.S. Army Air Corps in the daylight and Royal Air Force at night the war would have drug on longer than it did with tens of thousands more lives lost.

U.S. is the only country concerned about fighting a "nice" war. The rest dgaf who or how many they kill.

This picture of the cleanup of Dresden civilians always makes me a bit conflicted...
That said, I think I heard on one of the many WWII documentaries that I've watched recently that Hitler's reaction to these images was a shrug of the shoulders while saying "ok, put it back up as soon as possible". Crazy.

Wasn't he the only major English officer not to be knighted? If he went too far it was when he fire bombed dresden. But we bombed it the next day and also leveled wood and paper Japanese cities with incendiary bombs.
Moral of the story is don't decide to frick with the US and expect it to go well

Hmmm let's see...there was this campaign during the Battle of Britain where London was bombed and the Luftwaffe didn't care who got hit. The Blitz against English cities caused some 43, 500 civilian deaths and some two million homes damaged or destroyed across the country.
Let's talk about the V1's and V2's , once again launched against the civil population with no regard at all.
Germany dished it out, and they got it back.

Germany waiting for an apology is one of the most hysterical, laughable comments about the war I've ever heard. The Allies wouldn't know where to start in demanding Germany apologize.

If Harris had a problem is he was too fixated on bombers alone being able to win wars and break civilian morale. He had to be ordered to go after German and French infrastructure in the build up to dday because he refused to do it.
Dresden was to be his ultimate demonstration of the power of strategic bombing but it boomeranged because the Nazis got ahead of him on the propaganda front and allowed reporters in to "win the hearts and minds" and to show how barbaric the allies were. Unfortunately it worked
To call him a war criminal is laughable

Well, to be fair, they should probably get several apologies from Russia. You know, right after they apologize to them first.

Lol at Germany demanding apologies for anything related to WW2.
Have they apologized to UK for libbing rockets at their civilians? Any of the old Soviet states for raping and plundering as they marched through and used the citizens for slave labor? Then the whole industrialized killing thing they had going on...frick Germany for the rest of time.
