A bitcoin “wallet” is simply an address (series of numbers and letters) that receives coins and a “key” which can be represented by a series of words in a particular sequence, like a password, that authorizes the transfer of coins from that address to another. No one “possesses” bitcoin, they are simply entries on a public ledger and the key to an individual wallet simply allows the transfer of coins from that address to another. Those words are usually written down physically somewhere because if they are ever lost, that wallet becomes irretrievable. There are “hardware wallets” which hold that password in a secure environment so you don’t have to actually type the key on a computer and risk a keylogger getting your key, but the backup for those hardware wallets are still that series of words that have to be backed up somewhere.

False. Untraceable. Thats the one of the main selling points of Crypto currency.
Actually, the transfer is public to whatever address to which it may be sent. Whether someone can figure out who controls the receiving address is another matter.

Ehh
You could make it untraceable through multiple shapeshift, privacy coins, etc.
Dunno if these clowns know that though
This situation is a very real thing that is going to increase in the future

Given the fact that they drive across country and staked out his house enough to figure out the occupant's routines, I'd bet they had a plan for tumbling the transfers somewhat. Now if this kid with the Bitcoins had them all on one address, that'd be extremely dumb on his part.

You’re absolutely correct. I’m surprised it took this long for the first time we’ve heard about people planning to kidnap or hold people hostage for btc.
