I read the article. Those with the NDEs are fully convinced of their visions. The scientific rebuttals are admitted guesses based on limited known information. Still, the most practical answer is in line with the scientists.
While I've never believed in the common descriptions of heaven & hell, I tend to think that our energy is transferred somewhere else after death. Not sure if that is a conscious state or something entirely different. It's a topic that is fun to think about a little but not to the extent of shaping your entire life around.

Is it really believing if you're doing it "just to be on the safe side"?
I only put it that way in the spirit of the thread. I truly do believe. But it's totally cool if you don't want to.

Afterlife is the only thing poor and disabled people have to look forward to. That's the sad part.

Practical yet depressing.
Not really. You won't know any different.
It's not the actual non-existence that is depressing...the depressing part is knowledge of the upcoming non-existence during the period when I do exist...

I'll just go ahead and pray and believe and ask for forgiveness what not. Just to be on the safe side...
But that's not really the safe side unless you practice all of the religions that promise an afterlife, is it?
The Baptists think they're the only ones going to heaven, so what if they're right? To be on the safe side, you need to be a Baptist. The Catholics presumably have other requirements that the Baptists don't, so to be on the safe side, you need to meet those as well. Of course, then there are the muslims who have a whole different set of things you have to do get into heaven, so if they're right, being on the safe side means observing all their requirements, too. And what of the Buddhists and their belief in reincarnation? To be on the safe side, you need to do whatever it is Buddhists have to do in order to grow or whatever it is they think the soul does as it progresses from one life to the next. Then there are also, of course, the kooky cults like Jim Jones' or the Heaven's Gate, and it's at least possible that they might be right, so it's off with your balls and a tall glass of cyanide kool-aid if you want to be on the safe side.
Following religion to be on the safe side can be pretty tough unless you just arbritrarily choose one among the many religions who might possibly be right.

Yep, and that's one of the main reasons religion exists.

Then why do anything.
If I honestly believed that I'd be killing, raping, and pillaging until I died.

Better to let people think you're stupid than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

This whole thread is full of people who are totally ignorant of the vast field of study regarding metaphysics, morality, and theology.
I respect people who have studied these things in the pursuit of answers as to why we exist and what is our purpose and have then decided that they do not or can not believe in God or gods or an afterlife. If you simply ridicule what you don't understand and belittle those who seek answers to life's big questions then you're a fool.

Why not give in to every impulse?

How would I know? I've never done them. But if I didn't believe in an afterlife then the next frickhead who was going 50 mph on the interstate in the left lane or picked all the sausage out of the gumbo before everyone got a bowl, I would just put a bullet in and move on with my life.
If there is no God and no afterlife and no consequences of anything you do, then why feel guilty for anything?

It's odd that you immediately went to "kill and rape everyone" when presented with the idea of no afterlife. Might want to look into that.

And this is why I'm glad a lot of people believe in magic.
Are you really saying that the only thing stopping you from murdering people is fear of what will happen to you after your time on earth is over? You only think "treat others as you want to be treated" is useful as a guide to getting all the best magic when you die, and not just good advice?
