Is there no way to say definitively old the “child” really is?
I would lean towards thinking the mom saw Orphan and fabricated her own version, but the fact something is the plot of a movie doesn’t necissarily preclude it from happening in reality.

I know a family that adopted a child from Russia.
The child turned out to be a psychopath who tried to harm thier natural child.
The family hired a psychiatrist who told them to never leave the adopted child and natural child together or he would kill her.
The dad slept in the hall outside the adopted child's room and the mom slept on the floor behind the door of thier daughter knowing if the door opened she would wake up.
Eventually, the child was sent back to Russia, and the couple got divorced.
Sad, because they are both good people.

Not a midget.
