Is this just a positive spin on saying you're going to the woods to contemplate suicide?

Maybe you should just stay in BR and read Walden.

No offense intended. I wish I could take it and destroy it. If you haven't already, you should look into fasting for your daughter.

No, but I will be bringing a gun.

Since it will be a pocket gun, do I need a concealed carry permit while I'm out in the woods?

Well, money becomes an issue with traveling too far.

If money is the issue, reduce your trip to a week instead of two and get out of your neighborhood. Vegas isn’t the answer. Clear your head in a different time zone for 3-4 days. You will only need a few days alone to figure this out.

I suggest a cheap flight to Southwest USA. Arizona/New Mexico and look at the stars for an evening.

I’ve not read the entire thread but I’m going to assume it’s already been mentioned somewhere and still thrown in my vote for the Appalachian Trail.

Did it as a young man and am hoping to do it again just before I hit 70.

Tonight was the first time I considered posting updates. I thought it might me fun. But you're correct...it is shamish.

I like the way you think. I like your idea.

I've been out west many times, usually for two weeks at a time. Often I come back feeling depressed. Maybe a shorter trip would be different. Like a splash of water to the face rather than taking a whole dip.

Sounds like you just need to get outside and away. That is not too difficult. Kisatchie is a big area and you don't need a lot of special equipment or clothes.

True, you can pan for gold in AK in almost any stream.See it lining the streams. But it is in trace amounts. After a big rain you can find small nuggets in cutbanks along rivers. But OTH you can find arrowheads in Kisatchie, just as cool.

"There ain't no diamonds in the mine...in the mind, yeah."

ARK is a great choice. Cossatot, River in South Central has lots of places of interest, waterfalls, hiking trails. White, Buffalo Rivers, Greers Ferry....ARK is great right now.

I have camped with Kodiak Bears to get away from back stabbing Corporate People. I had bears in my front and back yard for 20 years and no problems. If you are terrified of bears, like fear of flying, or any other fear, look at the stats. You are in more danger in BR where you can get shot.

Take a small plastic flare gun pistol to scare off bears, critters, wild pigs, or whatever.

It is the only deterrent you need. Take dehydrated food.

There are black bears in ARK more dangerous than AK bears because they depend on people camping for food - stealing their food. But truly black bears attack more people than brown. Just don't take bacon...or anything smelly.

Maybe you just need a drive north and west to clear your mind.

Big sky is just as therapeutic as green grass and trees. People cannot see the cosmos in the city and have no reason to look up and contemplate infinity. That is liberating to know you are a spec, an organism amongst trillions like you on this 3rd Rock from the sun. You live in a minor galaxy around a small star worrying about life death and taxes and never look up or around. That can be a prison all its own.

My son climbed mount mitchell. North Carolina I think?? He drove from BR and spent at most I think 5-6 days total between drive time and camping/hiking. Did a few other things in the area. Pretty sure he went in the summer time?

He came home refreshed.

If this by any chance is actually a cry for help, seek it.

Wild Azalea trail. Its about 24 miles. You can start from the East or West. There are several primitive camp sites.

Go to Alltrails.com. It will have tracks, photos, and reviews for most trails in the country, along with interactive maps.

You will need to buy equipment though, if you are thinking about doing some real camping.

Light weight, good quality packs, tent and sleeping bags or hammocks, water purifier, stove, dehydrated food....Etc.

I spent about $800 on my original gear. I have added since then though.

I try to keep my pack around 40 lbs when hiking at least 8 miles a day for multiple days. That includes everything in it. So you need to know the weight of everything that will be in your pack.

I need new, better thoughts. I'm bitter at God. I have thoughts of "I'm a loser" creeping in my mind.

I understand this. I went through the same around 18-19. Not in the woods but in parish prison. Locked in a cage with rapists and murderers for growing marijuana. La takes the demon weed seriously. I turned my life around. Started to think outside of just myself. Lived in a few places around the globe. Came back, got married etc

It's possible. I've met a lot of people in bad places in their lives and honestly, almost none of them were able to make any substantive changes. I think you only get a few chances in life to drastically alter which way your life is headed. When one of them comes along, and you are paying attention and ready for change, you have to jump with both feet. Sounds like that's what you are doing. Good for you and good luck. I had to change almost everyone in my life to make it stick. Whatever it takes..
