Soak in alcohol. It'll kill the bacteria, what stinks in your hat. It won't affect the color at all. A friend taught me this trick and it works, especially with performance shirts/polos.

Lemme tell ya: if it has a leather strap BE CAREFUL. I just ruined 3 hats this weekend washing them in a bucket with OxyClean. The dye from the leather strap of one hat bled and now they all have various red stains. I have washed the non-leather-strapped caps multiple times now and it hasn't come out.

Yeah. He just douses it with alcohol and lets it air dry. I soaked it in the sink with about a half a bottle mixed in with water. Didn't affect the color at all, which I was worried about honestly. All of that performance material will start to smell bad after a while. This is the only thing I've found to salvage it.

If you're worried, start off with a shirt you don't care about and go from there.
