If you live in South Louisiana, then it's not the food. Something in the air this time a year triggers my GSD to itch like crazy. She needs a steroid shot this time a year every year.

We had a St, Bernard who was allergic to every protein we tried. He eventually did very well with Hill's Prescription Z/D.

If you're not sure then you can have the Vet do an allergy panel to figure out exactly what the dog is allergic to so that a proper diet can be tailored
This first step is changing the food or considering anything that has been introduced recently (like another pet, or new fragrance, etc etc, cleaning products). Pet allergies are a nightmare usually.

Been feeding my dogs Hill's since day one and their coats love it.

I give my dogs Candidae (recently switched from Holistic Select). Simply get more bang for my buck and my dogs love it.

For their coat, I use the following:

Baths

In-between baths

and/or

Bites or wounds

And for their teeth, they get this twice daily:

Plus I brush their teeth once a week as well.

The only reliable method for diagnosing food allergy is a strict elimination diet. The blood and saliva tests available have been proven time and again to be very unreliable.

Protein source is usually the offending allergen in dogs with food allergies. However, food allergies are not as common as environmental allergies.

We use Farmina. My dog enjoys the lamb and salmon low grain variety. Available through chewy.com.
I suggest switching to a different protein than what your dog is currently using. My uncle's dog was having similar issues and had to try a few different proteins. Dog no longer has issues and no meds or tests were given.

I have my pits on the blue buffalo non gmo organic grain free diet from petsmart because the pet expert there said that a lot of dogs are allergic to the pesticides used in dog food

What a racket.

Vet recommended changing his dog food.

I bet he did. Did he recommend some cheap alternative, or Blue Nature Nutrition 8000?

Are you really that dense. I've seen multiple dogs with food related allergies. I had a dog with a wheat allergy that would chew huge bald spots on it's arse. It was bad. Changed her food, and she was good.

Op... Check out the Costco nature's domain food. Great quality, grain free, and pretty damn cheap. Insanely cheap compared to some of the brands out there in pet stores.

To my knowledge there is zero documentation for this/Have never heard this before.

I would really want to see it on paper if it's true but it sounds like sales crap

The first completely accurate response in this thread. Shockingly, its from a DVM and not just some guy on the internet's opinion.

As a pet owner, it is my responsibility to give them what I believe are the best products and care that one can afford to give.

No different than what I do for my children.

I also own this little bad boy for when I clip and/or file their nails:

And last but not least, always important to clean their ears at least once every two weeks:

If you were allergic to potatoes to the point that you wanted to chew your leg hair off, would you keep eating them?

Probably not. So why continue feeding something to your dog that does?

Yeah I was kinda worried about that. I read on petmd.com that a lot of dogs were gluten sensitive and they recommended the Paleo Plus dog food so I might try that
