I did consider buying it, just so I could open it, and then return it in case it wasn't what I was looking for.
I'm almost 90% sure I'll like it, but I want to check out it's size, build quality, etc. Guess I'll try again this weekend.

Probably because they hadn’t gotten their demo model in yet for some reason and the salesperson isn’t authorized to just go unboxing a $250-300 item from inventory to be sold because if you don’t buy it, now they have an open box item to try to sell instead of factory sealed.

It makes sense. It's just frustrating to want to see the item before buying, they have dozens, but no display model.
What happens if I buy, open in store to check it out, then decide I don't like it and return it right there? Still an open box right?

Thats not how it works with computers/phones/electronics. Manufacturer provides a demo model to the retailer. Retailer doesn’t bust open the inventory that they paid for.

$35 restocking fee. So now if they sell it at a discount for being an open box item, they made up for it with restocking fee.

They can open one if they want to make money. Yes, they get a demo, but that depends on the store. Not all stores get the same demos.

Yeah I’m sure some retail employee making $11 an hour is gonna go bust out a $600 phone from the packaging for you to play with for a sale I doubt they get commission on.
