Best brands of washer and dryers?

I hear a lot of talk here about the Speed Queen line but my wife looked at some online and said she didn't like them. I think she wants something with more bells and whistles. (more stuff that can break) What major brands do you find to be most reliable/the best value. Also who has the best prices? We have only purchased from Home Depot or Lowes in the past.

I prefer redheads and brunettes.

Tell her to get over not liking the Speed Queen. And that she definitely doesn't want more bells and whistles. Then just get her a speed queen.

Get the one with the built in sandwich maker

one of my brothers friends does appliance repair. He said Speed Queen is the best for reliability, because they are so simple. They don't sing to you when the laundry is done, but they work.

We have Maytag Bravos XL washer and dryer. Very good. Very quiet and ton of capacity.

Columbus Washboard Company and Hills Rotary Clotheslines
Now that Speed Queen won't look so bad to your old lady.

I don't know what's best, but we've been pretty pleased with our LG washer. The matching dryer leaves a little to be desired, but I think its shortcomings are common across all dryers. Namely, the energy saving features that cut the cycle off before the clothes are completely dry. There is a way to bypass that though.

Speed Queen or GE. You need washer with agitator and ability to change amount of water..............That comes from an appliance repair man

I just had to replace some relatively new Samsung’s with Maytags.
Stupid me, I gave my daughter my GE Fridge and bought a Samsung. Ice maker went out 4 months later. Replaced it with unit they sent me for free. That one went out 4 months later.
Also, had to replace my 5 year old Samsung dishwasher.
I don’t know what the best is, but I damn sure know not to buy Samsung appliances.

Speed Queen or a cleaning lady who smokes crack and could also be described aptly with the phrase "speed queen".

I've had my bottom of the line Whirlpool set for 12 years. I moved them across the basin 3 times. They are still kicking. When something breaks, it's usually less than a $50 fix and a 5 minute YouTube video.

I have experience working in appliances distribution.
By far the best is Whirlpool. Can't be beat for the price and quality.
Kenmore is decent.
GE's appliances division was sold off to Haier which is Chinese. The quality has gone downhill since. The most quality concerns I dealt with was with GE. Wouldn't recommend.
LG is also questionable as far as quality.
Go to Home Depot and get yourself a Whirlpool.

I've always been told to stay away from Samsung and LG mainly because repair parts have to come from overseas.

I have a background in repairing these things. There are a few factors that control how clean your clothes are:
1. Water
2. Friction
3. Surfactant (Soap)
The new high efficiency without an agitator right off the bat gets rid of about 50% of friction. The new high efficiency regulate the water to where you get almost barely what you need. And of course you control the surfactant. What you need to look for is something with an agitator and something simple enough to where if the board goes out you aren't spending $600 to get a new board put in. I found the best machines had an agitator and a simple mechanical timer. If the timer went bad, you popped it out and replaced it. Let me say that the more bells and whistles you have the worse shite will get for you.
With ALLLLLL of that said, I caved to what she wanted and ended up with a Whirlpool Cabrio set with no agitator and bells and whistles. That I have to periodically disassemble and clean because of a buildup of red mildew gunk.

I wish I could remember which brand it was, but my appliance guy told me to avoid LG or Samsung like the plague because of trying to get replacement parts. It can take months at times.
He defintiely recommended Maytag and Speed Queen.

All reviews where they actually test recommend front loaders over top due to the superior cleaning and reduced wear on your clothes. Most of these agree that LG makes the most reliable washers, but as other posters have said, if you do have an issue, LG's are difficult to repair. Their network of repairmen is not great. That said, repairing any front loader is going to be a shite experience so it largely doesn't matter. I just had a GE top loader crap out after 2 years. Will never buy another.
Also, speed queen is just a more expensive version of an old Kenmore. If you want to go that route, find an appliance repair place that sells refurbs and buy an old top loader. No use spending $1k on same old product.

Front loaders tumble your clothes while cleaning which increases friction, which is a good thing. The best washers that I've ever seen where the commercial Pellerin and Milnor machines made in New Orleans.
