That depends on the quantity of snow.

Under 6inches on unplowed roads, a Subaru on blizzaks is amazing.

But if you mean real snow, that changes things. In eastern idaho in January I pulled a northstar ranger crew out of a drift. The secret? 4wd, severe snow rated 33s, and lockers.

I say Land Cruiser, but it’ll be several years older and twice the mileage vs a GX.

For $42k, you can get a CPO GX.

Just get good tires.

Nokian Hakkapelitta 9s are the best.

You want studs. You’ll get much better traction on ice.

Interwest Tires stocks them. They have locations across Montana.

Ground clearance is helpful when it gets deep.

A never bothered changing the all season 20's on my Avi in the winter and never had a problem. Busted through plenty of drifts with it.

Any AWD will do fine in snow.

My Subaru Outback dominates some snow.

Certainly isn’t heavy or super powerful, so extreme snow on the reg, maybe something else.

But I’ve driven through Wyoming and Colorado in dead winter in heavy snow and never felt like my vehicle lost it.

Whatever you get, put racing slicks on her and have a hell of a time.

Nokian makes some great tires, but they can only do so much to help an under equipped vehicle.

I run BFG KO2’s year round on my Land Cruiser and they have performed flawlessly. At some point it becomes more about the capabilities of the vehicle and less about the tire.

It’s only 2 instances but I have friends in N Dakota and in Boise. They have outbacks and Foresters. You can get either loaded out for just under that cost. My wife drives an 18’ Forester XT premium. It has the 2.0 boxer engine with 250hp. It’s a good little suv. 18’ was the last year they put that engine in that car b/c they wanted more fuel economy. It gets 21-22 in the city and 28-30 on the hwy.

If you're looking for the best, any choice performance wise is just a comparison of how close it can perform to a Land cruiser

Used Audi
Used Lexus
Subaru

Whatever used Land Cruiser you find for $42,000 or less will not be very new and not be very luxurious. I don’t think people realize Land Cruisers MSRP for $85,000+ and hold value well.

Am a huge fan of our Lexus LX (dressed up Landcruiser) and the wife had great luck with her AWD RX which I believe the AWD platform was licensed from Subaru.

Got the LX certified preowned for $60k, but if you were willing to go 2-3 years older $40k is doable. The RX or GX you could definitely get certified in the 40s.

You go to the mountains here in NC and it’s all Subaru’s though.
