Trying to stay under $42k (used is ok). Looking for reliability and as much "luxury" as can be purchased at that price.

Get a lightly used Lexus GX460 and be done with it.

Audi Q5 premium plus. Or big dog it and get a Q8.

Look for a 15 or 16 Jeep "Trailhawk" version of the cherokee.

I live in Montana and sell cars.
For that price, I would recommend either a new Jeep Grand Cherokee or a new/gently used Lexus/Toyota larger SUV. The Jeeps are as surefooted in the snow/ice as anything I’ve ever driven. My absolute worst winter driving experience was 180 miles round trip in a complete whiteout in a 2011 Grand Cherokee, and it never once made me nervous or put a foot wrong.
If you’re into this kind of thing, a gently used slightly older low mileage Escalade/Yukon Denali can be had for that price, and those are also excellent in snow. Very heavy plus full time AWD.
And for God’s sake put proper snow tires on whatever you buy.

We may or may not be purchasing this vehicle in Montana so I appreciate the info! If you want to help let me know. If you want to remain anonymous from internet weirdos I get that also.

No a family member is (who is not on TD lol). And myself and everyone I know has always lived here and know nothing about snow driving.
